Twenty-nine people were reported killed in an unprecedented attack on a refugee camp in the northwest of the Sudan region of Darfur, the United Nations said on Thursday.
According to initial reports, the Aro Sharow camp was attacked by 250 to 300 "armed Arab men on horses and camels" late on Wednesday, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement.
This is a horrible story. It is sad that when people need help like this, we are unable (or unwilling) to do anything. At least the U.N. is trying. Unfortunately, if they leave there will be nothing at all deterring future attacks.
I am reminded very much of a scene in The Constant Gardener. It is a very heavy movie, but I highly recommend it. I have not read the original book, by John le Carre, but I think I might check it out.
