From The Police's earliest days together to their final tour, photographer Lynn Goldsmith had unparalleled access to Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, capturing their meteoric and often turbulent rise to fame. The intimate portrait of the band that emerges from Goldsmith's hundreds of colour and black-and-white photographs is the closest anyone will come to being behind the scenes and on the road with The Police during this heady time.

Customer Rating: Summary: The Police Uncovered Comment: I always enjoyed Lynn's photographic style. She seemed to have a very special relationship with the members of The Police. Her shots brought out something in those guys that otherwise may have remained hidden from view. I have an older tome she did in the 80's with additional shots of the guys and I love both books.Sting, Stewart and Andy all contribute captions to the various shots on this 2007 edition, and just in time for the long awaited Police reunion. Interest in The Police is once again at a very high level, and one might think she was jumping on the band wagon to earn a buck from the "Police Machine." I don't think this is the case at all, at least as far as she goes. The book is divided somewhat into sections, with each band member getting their fair share of exposure as well as a section of group shots. I could say the obvious - "a must for Police fans", but I don't think I need to. We already know.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic Police book of photographs! Comment: I have been a Police fan since the beginning and have been waiting for this book for so long from Lynn Goldsmith. I have all her books which I think are made of superior photographs. This one has something really special with a double page fold out at the end...it is an amazing piece of art! I look forward to her next book Rock and Roll and I hope she includes more Police iamges.
Customer Rating: Summary: Far from perfect Comment: First, I must underline the perfect Amazon service. The book arrived before I expected it and in perfect condition: 5 stars to the service then.
The photo book could have been better in my personal opinion. Photos are beautiful, well printed, but some of them are really too known to gain a place in a "new" photo book of The Police. The biggest defect is, however, the lack of captions: only some words by The Police put casually, and in most cases well known phrases taken from other books (as stated on the credits). I would have preferred if every pic had a caption of when and where it was shoot. From this point of view, Danny Quatrochi's Police Confidential is far superior to Lynn Goldsmith's book. And concluding: the collage photo of Sting at the end contains so many pictures I never saw that one ends the book thinking why on earth Lynn didn't put "those" photos in the book!
All in all, not bad, but it leaves me a feeling of "unfinished" and "it could be better" hurried book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Another nice Police book from Lynn Goldsmith. Comment: Lynn Goldsmith had a Police photobook out before, in the eighties I believe. I own it, and it's got some great pictures in it. It's more artistic looking than this one, and done entirely in black and white. This one is totally different.
This book is great to have along with the other one. This one has quotes from the guys, color pictures, and a good many pictures that I- who have seen many Police photographs before- have never even seen before. Lots of their typically fun and weird poses that we love, and some more serious one that we love too. Like the old book, this has a section for each time frame included, and a section for each of the boys. I definitely recommend it for a fan, even if you have her other book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rock On - and a great cause! Comment: Timed to coincide with the Police's reunion tour, Lynn Goldsmith's "The Police: 1978-1983" is a visual history of The Police's rise to fame and Goldsmith's close working relationship with the band is apparent throughout. As in her other books like 'Photo Diary', Goldsmith invites you to submerge yourself in the world of the superstars of rock - there are photos of Sting jumping rope and going to the movies, of Copeland roller-skating, of all of them recording and goofing around on Montserrat. And, of course, true to Goldsmith's style, there are shots of the band in makeup - looking good, silly, and odd.
The book opens with an introduction by Phil Sutcliffe, a British music journalist who was instrumental in the formation of the band, and closes with Goldsmith's photo-montage of singer-bassist Sting, made up of some 2,000 shots of individual shots of each band member and shots of the group. "The Police: 1978 - 1983" has another bonus - twenty-five percent of Goldsmith's royalties go to Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, an organization that funds music programs for children, and donates instruments to schools.
Goldsmith's fantastic book takes you on a historic ride that redefined popular music - a guilty pleasure that should be enjoyed by any fan.
