Mercy Thompson's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself.

Customer Rating: Summary: Favorite Heroine in Urban Fantasy Comment: "Moon Called" is an urban fantasy about Mercedes Thompson, known as Mercy to her friends. As a "walker" Mercy shape changes into a coyote, and has friends of an otherworldly nature. The world she inhabits has seen the fae come out of hiding, so the populace knows that there is a little bit of supernatural in the world, but people like her, the werewolves, and the vampires are all still in shadows and not really out in the public view.
One of the interesting bits of the novel is that they actually track the coming out of supernatural creatures, granted it is in the background, but it certainly is refreshing to see the subject talked about as a present tense strategy than as a past tense "whee the world knows now!" Another thing I like about the novel is that Mercy is an auto mechanic, and imminently competent.
This book is what I have wanted other urban fantasy novels to be. The mistakes that other novels normally make in an urban fantasy are not made here: Mercy isn't so headstrong and independent that she doesn't know when to get help; she takes karate but isn't a black belt yet; her finances are not great, but they aren't poor either. Bascially, of all of the urban fantasy series I have read (Anita Blake, Sookie Stackhouse, etc) this series has the most likable heroine, hands down.
The novel itself is almost nonstop action, but in the best possible way. There is a slight element of romance to the book, but it is very much in the background, and the "love triangle" presented in this first book gets resolved by book three, so that is really nice. Nothing worse than having to endure 10+ books of an indecisive heroine who becomes unlikable simply because of her inability to have a spine and decide.
Mercy's world is interesting, fun, dangerous, and makes for a great read. The plot is fantastic, but since it is mainly a mystery, I don't want to say too much more about it. If you like Urban Fantasy, kickass heroines, lots of action and wrapped in mystery, get the book. You will love it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fresh paranormal trilogy Comment: In Moon Called, Patricia Briggs creates a thrilling community of werewolves, vampires, witches and other magical creatures that have been hiding from the human world. Until recently, that is.
The first installment in the Mercy Thompson trilogy introduces the feisty heroine and her paranormal friends. There's Stefan, the deceptively friendly vampire; Elizaveta the snooty Russian witch; Adam the Alpha of the local werewolf pack; and Samuel, Mercy's one-time sweetheart and son of the most powerful werewolf in America, Bran. Mercy herself has the unique ability to shift into a coyote ("One moment I'm a person and the next a coyote: pure magic").
The novel recants many of the same ideas in other popular paranormal stories, but does it with a new energy and an interesting, no-nonsense heroine. A little brash and extremely stubborn, Mercy bumps heads with every character, but manages to attract the attention of three powerful males in the story. The readers sense that Mercy is more important than she understands. Briggs avoids confirming their suspicions by the end of this first novel.
This paranormal page-turner is full of plot twists and little hints that there is more going on than meets the eye. Moon Called leaves the readers more than ready for another dose of Mercy Thompson.
Customer Rating: Summary: Moon Called Comment: Patricia Briggs is at her excellent best again! Each book entangles you in the characters every adventure. This is no exception. A fine read!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great author, great stories Comment: All of the Patricia Briggs books are great, haven't read a bad one yet. My wife and I really enjoyed the three "Mercy Thompson" books that we have read so far. If there was any justice in the world, P. Briggs would be as well off as the author of the "Harry Potter" books. Ms. Briggs' books are entertaining, well written, and hard to put down. Other recent authors in fiction genres that I read that I have liked include Terry Pratchett and Lois McMaster Bujold (so that you have an idea of my taste, rather than to convince you to read them).
Customer Rating: Summary: Moon Called: If you don't find trouble, trouble will find you. Comment: Story:
Mercy Thompson is not your normal auto mechanic. One could say that being a auto mechanic is the most normal thing about her. Mercy is one of the Fae known as a skin walker. Her ability lets her transform into a coyote more or less instantly and gives her enhanced senses as well as extra strength. Unfortunately for Mercy she knows of no one else that has this ability so she lives as one of the Fae that do not reveal their existence to the rest of the world. She also happens to be "protected" by the leader, Adam, of the local wolf pack who more or less lets her live as she wants. One day Mercy is working in her shop dealing with a stubborn car and a mountain of paper work that won't file itself, (casualty of her assistant leaving for a full ride scholarship) when a young man walks in looking for work. Mercy can tell that something is off about the young man who only goes by the name Mac but she has a soft spot for those who are down and out due to events beyond their control so she offers him a job. Things go relatively smoothly for a few days until it becomes apparent that Mac is a werewolf without a pack. Seeking to prevent a tragedy due to the rigid rules the werewolf's live by Mercy introduces Mac to Adam the leader of the local werewolf pack who agrees to take care of him. Unfortunately Mac was an accident that someone doesn't want solved and Mercy is soon in a race to protect her friends and find out why someone is trying to start a war among the werewolf packs.
--------
This is a pretty good start to a series. The main character is interesting and doesn't come across as whiny or annoying. The background to the story is also interesting and since this is a series hopefully the whys will be answered as more books come out. I can say that the ending to this book was definitely interesting and hey a writer who actually remembered that the bad guy doesn't always have to be out to take over the world or something. So I'll have to say that this series starting off is better than the lighter stuff that is in this genre. Then again so was the Dead in Dixie series, the Rachel Morgan series, the Undead and series, etc... My point is these series start off great, then good, then hopefully the next book will be good, then I give up I need a Idiot's guide to make sense of it all. My point is that unless each book stands by itself, even if it is a series then they run out of steam. Hopefully the next two are just as good and I'll have a series that is worth keeping up with. I would recommend this to those who like paranormal action adventures, those who like the above series, and those who like paranormal romances.
