Sometimes a B movie can rise above its big-budget brethren. The Siege of Firebase Gloria is a lean, straightforward film about a troupe of Marines defending an isolated outpost in Vietnam. While on reconnaissance, Sergeant-Major Hafner (R. Lee Ermey) gets a glimmering of the impending Tet offensive when he comes across a massacred village. When the patrol arrives at Firebase Gloria, Hafner takes command from the addled commanding officer and desperately tries to prepare the disorganized base for the coming assault. There's nothing remarkable about the story--this is a war movie--but it's not only told with efficient skill, it's strikingly clear-eyed about the brutalities committed by both sides of the war. The Viet Cong are depicted with as much sympathy as the Americans; in fact, through smart juxtapositions, the perspective of the native soldiers becomes increasingly clear and compelling, even though their dialogue is never translated. With clearly drawn yet realistic characters, a decent script, and unfancy but effective camerawork, Firebase Gloria paints a more vivid and unsettling portrait of the Vietnam experience than far more high-minded movies like Full Metal Jacket. Ermey gives a grounded, genuine performance, and straight-to-video star Wings Hauser is both scary and sad as a ruthless, alienated corporal. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Rating: Summary: how to make a customer happy Comment: I purchased a vhs copy of firebase glora the seller send a poor copy I complained and he went through a lot of searching to get me a good copy I know that he in fact purchased a copy from another seller at retail cost and by doing so he actually lost money on the transaction All this just to make good on a sale .This seller is great to do business with I would buy from him any time I see him advertised.
Customer Rating: Summary: Deserves DVD Comment: It is a shame that this movie is not on DVD. Two other movies about Vietnam should also be on DVD, "The Boys In Company C" and "Purple Hearts". I am a Vietnam Veteran, having served with Foxtrot Co. 2/26 3rd Marine Division(5-68 thru 12-68). Salute to those who gave their all in the Vietnam War. Semper-Fidelis.
Customer Rating: Summary: best vietnam movie ever-bar none Comment: There is a reason this movie got more five star ratings than any other, it deserves it!!! This is a great movie! It will go down in history as a claasic and it should! If you don't own this ***** movie your collection is incomplete.
Maybe someday this movie will be remastered on DVD but don't hold your breath. get it before they are ungettable.
Customer Rating: Summary: Actual Vietnam War Account by a retired Marine Sergeant Major. Comment: This movie, that stars R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket, Saving Silverman), and Wings Hauser, is my favorite war movie of all time. Period. I am a war veteran and I can tell you this much--This movie is war at it's most realistic perspective...
...This movie starts off pretty graphic, in a liquidated village with no signs of life. The director shows you how all of the main characters each have their own backgrounds and stories relating to each of them.
What I particularly love about this movie is that this movie covers every aspect of combat, including hand-to-hand, air cavalry, head-to-head--one army versus another army battle, medical aspects of war, torture, interrogation, Reconnaissance, P.O.W.'s, etc.
I must admit, just like the Vietnam War, this movie has a sad ending, but this is definitely for ADULTS ONLY as it's very graphic, but perfect for any Marine/Soldier/Sailor/Airman/War Veteran/Historian/War Movie Lover. Without a doubt, the greatest war movie I've ever seen and I've seen em all. This belongs in every War Movie Collector's/enthusiast's collection. 5 Stars.
