Made two years after Citizen Kane, this 1943 version of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre sure looks like star Orson Welles muscled his way behind the camera much of the time. (In fact, costar Joan Fontaine--who plays the title character--has maintained that Welles methodically did just that every day on the set.) Not that the film's official director was a hack: Robert Stevenson, who later had a busy career at Disney making numerous live-action hits for the studio, such as Mary Poppins, gets the credit. But there's no mistaking Welles's masterful hand in the film's bold and creative look, and there's no getting away from his enigmatic charisma as Rochester, the widower who takes in Jane as a governess to his daughter. An engrossing, gorgeous film, there's even a small role for Elizabeth Taylor at the beginning as Jane's unlucky, doomed friend at a cruel boarding school. --Tom Keogh

Customer Rating: Summary: a must see if you are a welles's fan!! Comment: Orson Welles does a superb job as Edward Rochester. I fall in love with him everytime I see this movie. This film and The third man are my favorite performances of his. Orson plays this part very strong and vulnerable as the character of Edward Rochester was in the book. So handsome and romantic and oh, that beautiful speaking voice of his!! Joan Fontaine as Jane is strong yet can't help falling for her employer as she is his little girl's governess. Peggy Ann Garner {one of my favorite child actresses} is also enchanting as Jane Eyre as a young girl. Her elfin like face and performance are both heartfelt and endearing. Some people reviewing Fontaine's performance call her mousey or not strong or independent enough. But look at her face in some of the scenes, she shows her displeasure at what Rochester says and he mentions that fact. When she goes to Thornfield to be the governess she is about 20 years old and also the year is 1840. I think she is her own person and how she could have left Rochester when they are so in love, shows she was pretty strong!!! There are 2 commentaries, one with Margaret O'brien {who plays little Adele} and also an Oson Welles biographer. And another by film historians. There is an isolated music score track by Bernard Herrmann and a featurette on the men behind "Jane Eyre". All in all a picture worth seeing and also the look of the film is great. Well done!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great classic movie! Comment: I have enjoyed this movie since I was a young girl. It has only gotten better with age. The performances are wonderful and Orson Welles is terrific. I appreciate that the movie is still in glorious black and white. The shadows of his home would be lost along with the brooding atmosphere.
Customer Rating: Summary: Jane Eyre DVD Comment: It's apparently not a chick flick! The funny thing is the DVD of Jane Eyre was wanted even more by my husband, Dennis, than by me...and I wanted it real bad. We are trying little by little to replace all our VHS classic movies with DVD. You made it possible with this one. So glad to have it...in perfect condition...and shipped very quickly. Now Dennis goes around the house desperately calling out, "Jaaaane, Jaaane!" like Mr. Rochester does when he needs Jane so badly after she went out of his life. You'd have to be there. But thanks.
