The late Albert Magnoli directed this ragged but effective 1984 drama (with lots of musical interludes) starring (the artist formerly known as) Prince as a Minneapolis musician whose ego is his biggest obstacle to fame and love. In the backdrop is a strong story about the character's violent family life and a father made monstrous by broken dreams. Prince's film debut as an actor is not bad at all, and he is surrounded by a few people (Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, and members of his own band) for whom he has served as a mentor in real life. The music is loud and good: "When Doves Cry," "Purple Rain," "Let's Go Crazy"--you remember the soundtrack. --Tom Keogh

Comment: Us Gen-Xers were big fans of Prince "back in the day" and I still love this movie. The entire soundtrack is one hit after another. The movie is kind of corny but still works. Appolonia(sp?) never looked better! 8) The transfer is great considering the film source wasn't that amazing to begin with. I bought this mainly for the Dolby True HD soundtrack and I have to say it was a little heavy in the surrounds but still sounds good. It is much, much better than the SDDVD. I have a combo Blu/HDDVD player so buying the HDDVD is no big deal for me, but a deal breaker if you don't have the right player. I'm glad I bought this, but wouldn't reccommend it for more than $12 considering HDDVD is gone.

Comment: I loved this movie, it's a classic, arguably Princes best work. This movie will be enjoyed by movie lovers generation to generation. I'm greatful to Amazon, and Chicodigital for this movie. I love and appreciate the good work Amazon is doing.

Comment: I forgot what a fun and cute movie this is. I happened to catch it on t.v. one night and I'm glad I did. It made me remember how much I love the movie and I love his music; from "Controversy" (this is the first song I heard from Prince) to his recent stuff.
