Customer Rating: Summary: Great 'feel-good entertainment for the family. Comment: We have been Herriot fans for years, and cannot get enough of the wonderful episodes on these videos. Laughter and warmth balance the truths of real-life people the pre- and post-war for farmers in the English Dales. We especially like the actors who participate ... they are not the Hollywood model types, but instead are people who easily make you believe they lived through the various stories.
Can't say enough good about it ... these are classic.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Step Back In Time Comment: Last Christmas as were strolling along the Plaza in Kansas City we visited the Store of Knowledge and I saw the series for sale. Brought back a lot of wonderful memories. Received it for Christmas and enjoy this wonderful slice of life now even more than when it was being aired. What a great show. The characters come to life and are so memorable, the countryside is gorgeous, the animals steal the show (great realism in the births, deaths, daily lives of animals), it is a joy to see the period so faithfully represented and in such detail down to the china. While the stories are about animals and the sometimes eccentric, always wonderful, vets who care for them, it is really about so much more. It is about the gentle nature of James and his love for animals and his wife Helen, Siegfried and Tristan's delightful brotherly bickering, the wonderful farmers and everyone else who inhabit the dales, the language, the sounds, the foods (bangers, kidney pie, pints), and the joy of visiting the wonderful life of days gone by so convincingly portrayed in the series. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry, but it will leave you wanting more.
Customer Rating: Summary: One of the most well rounded book adaptations ever ... Comment: Years ago I ran across this series on PBS, and have been amazed that ever since their creation by the BBC in the mid-seventies this interpretation of the James Harriot novels hasn't lost any appeal. The heart felt stories of a young man in pre-WW II Britain attempting to become vetrinarian during a depression weighs well due to the vibrant characters depicted by brilliant actors, the scope of human experience, and the drama of life in harsh times and harsh environments. Herein is some of the finest family entertainment ever crafted for the television audience, and an authentic peek into a bygone life style in simpler times. Probably one of the most charismatic moments in television history is the final sequence of the brilliant final episode when the three vets must 'draw straws' to choose who will be the unlucky member to correct a misplaced calf bed and miss their celebratory gathering in Skeldale House. These 13 'hour long' episodes will never fail any viewer, and will hook you into the following couple series which are JUST AS GOOD as the first. Words will never convey just how excellent this series really is....you'll just have to buy it...NOW!
Customer Rating: Summary: If you have read the books, you will appreciate seeing it! Comment: A wonderful set of videos that allows you to experience it especially after reading the books. They of course could not add every single detail from the books, but they are wonderful. Highly recommended for fans!
Customer Rating: Summary: A must for Herriott fans Comment: As with other reviewers, I can't wait until the rest of the series is available. I even looked at the new Herriott museum in Thirsk, with only a few titles and none for U.S. vcrs. These are in my mind some of the best of the series, the early episodes and key ones showing James coming to Yorkshire, early experiences, dating and then marriage.
