Editorial Reviews:

Kimba the White Lion began as a manga (comics) series Osamu Tezuka wrote and drew from 1950 through 1954. The title character was the son of the Panja, the Jungle Emperor, although his large ears and round head made him look more like a mouse than a feline. The stories remained popular enough for Tezuka to produce an animated series in 1965, the first color animated program on Japanese television. A substantially reedited version began showing in America in 1966. Tezuka followed Kimba with a second series that depicted the character as an adult with a mate and cubs of his own. It finally aired in America in 1984 on the Christian Broadcasting Network as Leo the Lion.

It is an article of faith among Tezuka's fans that Disney's 1994 hit The Lion King was based in part on Kimba, although the artists who made the record-breaking feature deny any influence. Neither side has commented on how much Tezuka borrowed from Disney's Bambi for Kimba. --Charles Solomon

Summary: People, yeah it's not the original, LEAVE IT ALONE!
Comment: Ok, there are so many views on Kimba, I have to put mine in. My God people! You keep harping on the fact that it's not the original Kimba. We get it all ready! To start off my review, The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion is a wonderful series. The English Dub is not aweful, and neither is the animation! Yes, the story is different, and yes, Pioneer Entertainment toned it down a bit. But the fact is, all stories change! Pioneer Entertainment toned down the story to make it sutible for younger audiences, and, in my opinion, it worked. I started hunting for the New Kimba VHS's when I was 3! And, ever since I've watched it, I've been hooked for life! If you don't like it, don't watch it! But stop ruining it for those of us who do! Secondly, When Kimba was recreated, it changed, but that does not mean it was ruined. It's all in the eye of the beholder. To those who are long upstanding fans of the original Kimba series, it may seem totaly destroyed. To those who are just starting out as a new generation of Kimba fans, or if your love the old and the new, it may seem totaly awesome! Oh, and, when Kimba became "The New adventures of Kimba the white lion, it was not wrecked. You want to see and Anime that was destroyed in English dub? Watch Mew Mew Power on 4kids. Now, in closing, I thouroghly enjoy The New Adventures of Kimba, and highly recomend it.

Summary: Mediocre remake from 1989.
Comment: Where does Amazon get their "editorial reviews"--the ones that AREN'T written by customers? For this "New Adventures of Kimba" tape, the clear implication is that the tape contains the original 1966 episodes, which it doesn't. This tape is drawn from the 1989 reworking of the story, and the animation and story are nothing like the original. And the English dub is almost universally hated--with good reason.

Secondly, Amazon's own reviewer asks about how much Tezuka "borrowed" from Disney's Bambi. The fact is that Kimba was Tezuka's ANSWER to Bambi. Tezuka figured that if the animals had an interspecies society going, they would have to incorporate man into it somehow, and this is one of the main points of the original Kimba. This 1989 version lost much of this idea in the Japanese original, and the English translation trashes much of what's left. There's really no point to the "New Adventures of Kimba" series.

Comment: This movie was great! I hope more like it come out soon."Kimba the White Lion or 'Lion Prince'" are good tapes, too, but this is alot like the frist one,so like it as well.A good story, wonderfull animation.PS T.K. said "That's O.k. But historicly,(lions eat guys like us)!" Oh, let's see...where have I heard this before...Oh,yes I remember.Timon & Pumbaa:"We're talking about a lion!(Lions eat guys like us)!" "Simba copied Kimba."Well, now Kimba copied Simba. Like I care. I think there shounld be a show with both in it,but what do I know I'm just 14 year old kid!But the movie and the old "Kimba" shows are wonderfull. So is "The Lion King","The Lion King 2:Simba's Pride",and "Leo the Lion:King Of The Jungle".PPS "Leo the Lion:King of the Jungle" was once one of Kimba's titles. Summary: The little-known 1989 remake of the classic TV show.
Comment: This is an official release of three episodes from the -second- time Kimba was brought to the TV screen. Some say this is the last project that Kimba's creator, Osamu Tezuka, worked on. It is different, a re-working of the old story, and takes some getting used to for us old fans. In some ways the presentation is disappointing; it feels like the series was altered for a modern Saturday Morning TV audience. The new story arc is interesting, tho, and I consider the series worth seeing. I'll be buying every tape they release.
