Editorial Reviews:

Landing on Water may not be Neil Young's worst album, but it's probably the least noteworthy collection he's assembled. For what turned out to be his penultimate Geffen album, Young rebuffed his regular set of co-producers in favor of West Coast journeyman Danny Kortchmar--seemingly in the interest of honing a more radio-friendly sound. As a result, the singer finds himself bobbing his way through layers of synthesizer fills and Steve Jordan's strident drumming; the whole thing feels like a bland '80s rock soundtrack. None of these songs have even become concert salvage projects--evidence that their composer doesn't hold them in high regard. The one standout here is "Hippie Dream," a scathing death-of-the-counterculture screed inspired by David Crosby's then-life-threatening drug problems: "Another flower child goes to seed / In an ether-filled room of meat hooks / It's so ugly" Young wails, and one can't help but wish the music had half as much bite as the lyrics. --Steven Stolder

Summary: Neil Young's worst album of all time!!!!!!!!!
Comment: I had the unfortunate experience of hearing this album again last week which reminded me why I traded in this piece of garbage years ago in college. This is hands down "THE WORST NEIL ALBUM EVER"!

Electric drum kit? Please. At least it fits the trend of the '80s....his worst album would be released during the worst music decade. Do yourself a favor and save your ears...don't buy or even listen to this album unless you need a laxative.

Summary: NY's most under-rated album
Comment: I recon that if this album were recorded with accousting instruments, it would get rave reviews. I enjoy listening to it, which is more than can be said about what are really his worst albums: Hawks and Doves and that one with Willie Nelson on it from around the same time.

Summary: 80's Neil Young
Comment: The 80's were a time of experimentation for Neil Young. He produced several albums during this period which can best be described as genre exercises: country, rockabilly, techno, etc. It wasn't until years later that fans found out that his domestic life was in such turmoil that he couldn't write songs from personal experiences and subsequently began hiding behind various studio techniques and musical approaches. Although that explains why his output during this period was so unusual, the music should still be judged by its own merits, and records like Old Ways and Everybody's Rockin' are still disappointments. He was finally sued by Geffen Records for producing uncharacteristic music, despite the fact that they had been pushing Neil for a more progressive sound in his recordings.

After all the court appearances (the lawsuit was finally thrown out), Landing On Water was his concession to Geffen Records. It had an 80's progressive rock feel complete with synthesizers and a big drum sound (which, by the way, was provided by Steve Jordan, and was NOT produced using a drum machine). This was not Neil's first album featuring heavy use of synthesizers, but unlike Trans, Neil's voice and electric guitar are allowed to emerge and perform alongside all the bleeps and blurps. Although this album is not similar to anything from his 70's output and could be dismissed as yet another genre exercise, Landing On Water has some killer songs inspite of itself, stuff like Violent Side, Touch The Night, Hippie Dream, and particularly Pressure. There are a couple of dogs, like Weight Of The World, but even his best records have a misfire or two. Which is not to say that Landing On Water is one of his best, but it is hardly one of his worst, as some of the other reviews here would have you believe. It is simply an interesting diversion that has a few very pleasant surprises for those who might be interested in more than just Neil's folkie and/or garage band output.
