Considered by many to be the Material Girl's most mature effort of the '80s, Like a Prayer upped the ante of controversy with its gospel-infused title track and the singer's emotional confessions throughout. It also unveiled the hit "Express Yourself," which ushered in the era of Madonna as a "stainless steel sexual icon." Musically, Prayer showcased her burgeoning songwriting prowess, with the beautiful "Oh Father" and the perky pop of "Cherish." Besides a throw-away collaboration with Prince ("This Is Not a Love Song"), the CD stands as one of her strongest works, eschewing the strong dance beat influences from her past--she saved that for the remixes--and concentrating instead on melody and structure. Like a Prayer also gave a hint of things to come with the delightful "Dear Jessie" displaying a maternal side worthy of her name. --Steve Gdula

Customer Rating: Summary: Like a Prayer Comment: Like a Prayer is Madonnas 1989 release and her 4th studio album is not one of my favorite Madonna albums. Still it has many fine tracks, i.e., Express Yourself, Cherish , Keep it together and Dear Jessie. I never liked like a prayer mostly because I do not like gospel music. The book-let is so so. The cover art is confusing. I have no idea what she meant with this one. We get a nice list of personnel and muisicians and who played what. The lyrics could have been in a bit larger font as I find it a bit small. The center photo is a bit strange with a pose that is supposed to mean something that I have no idea what. 4/5.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Work for a pop singer Comment: This is clearly Madonna's Pinnacle, those who deny it are kidding themselves.
Every song bar act of contrition on here is a winner. It shows Madonna has something to say and showcases that talent. Stephen Bray and Pat Leonard do help the cause here but ultimately it's madonnas lyrics and voice that hit home these amazing songs.
Yes i love this album, but do not own any other Madonna works.
Highlights include the beautiful Promise to Try, the cheery Dear jesse and the stormy Till death do us part.
It stands up very well 19 years after release, do yourself a favour non Madonna fans and pick this one up, you won't be disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not one of my favorite Madonna CD's Comment: I recently bought this CD along with her other 80's music. I had high expectations because "Like a Prayer" is one of my favorite Madonna songs. Having said that...only her released singles were the best part of this album. I do respect the fact that she made this a personal album, but to me it came off as kind of boring. I now have all of her studio albums, and I would rank this as one of the worst ones.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best Madonna's Album Ever Comment: One of the GREATEST album ever. After so many years, this is still my favourite and BEST Madonna's album (I am sure all Madonna's die-hard fans will agree with me). I love every track on the album (even the last track!!!). (If you still can) Check out the remixes for LIKE A PRAYER, EXPRESS YOURSELF, CHERISH, KEEP IT TOGETHER. Can't wait for the Re-mastered release! Please please ....
Long live the Queen of Pops.
