Editorial Reviews:

Eddie Murphy does keep testing our patience by trying to expand his cinematic horizons. For some reason, he is the only person on the entire planet who can rescue a magically gifted child from the clutches of evil kidnappers. A detective who specializes in locating lost children, he is chosen by a Tibetan princess to lead a rescue mission that will save the world from the clutches of Old Nick.

Murphy was at the height of his career, having enjoyed his first box-office crest when he attempted this more dramatic role. If his career survived the gamble, it certainly was not because of the lackluster script, mediocre production values, or leaden performance of costar Charlotte Lewis. Not that Murphy does much with his role, either. He mugs for the camera and his timing is off in both dramatic and comedic moments. Stick with his earlier triumphs, or explore his subsequent return to confident comedy turns in The Nutty Professor. -- Rochelle O'Gorman

Summary: They don't make movies like this anymore
Comment: There was a time when movies expected us to suspend our disbelief as they followed a hilarious plot without the burden of self-reference or irony. Eddy Murphy shines in this light and uninhibited search for the child who will save the world from its sins.

Summary: Funny, Funny, Funny
Comment: I saw this movie for the first time when I was 9 years old. 21 years later, I still laugh when I watch it. It has so many classic lines in it. "Only a man whose heart is pure can wield the knife and only a man whose a** is narrow can fit down these stairs." Ya gotta love it. It's Eddie Murphy at his 80s best and it's hilarious. It's a very good timepiece as well....in the opening shots, they show random scenes in L.A. and premium gas is only 99 cents a gallon! LOL!

Summary: Eddie Murphy saves the Day
Comment: When a child with magical powers is kidnapped in Tibet, a Los Angeles social worker Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is destined to save the "chosen one" and defeat the demon Sardo Numspa (Charles Dance). Great role by Victor Wong as the beggar/Lama. Plenty of laughs, good action.
