Editorial Reviews:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time may be the greatest single-player video game ever created in any genre. It's that good. Those new to Nintendo's enormously popular Zelda series will be glad to know this game stands completely on its own. Our hero, Link, starts the game as a young boy living in a magical forest village populated by elf-like children. But there is evil lurking in the world. Strange monsters are appearing, and the land is changing. It's up to Link to discover why, defeat the monsters, and stop the evil at its source.

The game world's ever-changing environment looks like a fairy tale come to life. Majestic waterfalls, towering castles, and magical forests are a feast for the eyes and ears. Rivers flow, rain falls, the sun and moon rise and set. There's even an erupting volcano! Exploring this world is half the fun of the game. Along the way, you learn musical tunes that you can play on the flute-like Ocarina, a magical device that helps you teleport, alter the weather, even control time itself.

Character interaction is important to gather clues. The fairy princesses, singing frogs, and dragons you'll meet can be cute, humorous, or somewhat terrifying. Sprinkled liberally throughout the game are hundreds of secret treasures and enjoyable minigames (one of which, the fishing game, would almost be worth buying by itself). Game controls are easy to learn. There's even an elaborate fight training course built right into the game. Controlling the hero quickly becomes instinctive, and you can concentrate on saving the world. To win the game, you'll have to use not only Link's sword, but your mind as well. This game's challenging and inventive puzzles really make you think. In fact, to keep from getting stuck, it's worth spending a few bucks on an official player's guide. With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Nintendo has come up with an all-consuming adventure title that will provide days of engrossing gameplay. --Eric Fredrickson

Pros:

  • Best single-player video game
  • Freedom to explore a rich, complex world
  • Helpful fairy guide gives hints
  • Charming, humorous, lighthearted, yet challenging
Cons:
  • Some puzzles can be frustrating
  • Only one saved game per player--don't save when you're stuck!
  • Much more fun with Rumble Pack

Summary: Influential and still surprisingly fun after all these years
Comment: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was perhaps the most critically acclaimed game for Nintendo's Nintendo 64 and perhaps among all games of 1998. This was the first 3D incarnation of the legendary series and while sticking to its roots in most regards, the game actually managed to elevate the 3D action/adventure game by introducing several elements that would eventually work its way into many other games. On top of its influence, the game also boasted a whole lot of one thing that's very important to games: fun.

Although looking back on it, the graphics are very dated, with giant noticeable polygons, nonetheless, the art-style, which takes advantage of the chunkiness, is still fairly resolved and appreciable. The game is bright and colorful when it needs to be, but can also get dark and dismal in other parts, such as inside dungeons and such. Every once in the while, the game still surprised me with its technical ability, such as the stretch and high speed zooms found in a couple parts of the game. It's also impressively directed and the automatic camera rarely had any problems, leading to a seamless gameplay experience.

And gameplay is where this one shines. Not only did this game elevate context sensitive button presses, automatic jumping (which still required some platforming finesse) and Z-targeting to lock onto targets, it also boasts smooth and responsive gameplay, characteristic of Nintendo and a whole lot of puzzles, combat and more. The game also helps you out by providing you a fairy that, maybe even incessantly, gives clues about what to do next, but fortunately, the game doesn't railroad you into your next action, but lets you get to it at your own pace.

There's a whole lot to explore in the game and many secrets that, although aren't necessary to complete the game, still provide added enjoyment for completists and frankly, just more game for the buck. This includes a dozen minigames that reward your ability in different aspects of the game and plenty of side quests. Getting everything in this game would probably double or even triple the amount of game you can play.

Of course, the weakness in the game, as typical of Nintendo, is still the story. It's still a rather basic one, almost the same story as most Zelda games, as Ganon (or Ganondorf, in this incarnation) tries to take over the world, Zelda is in peril and Link's gotta save the day. The particular conceit of this game however, has Link traveling back and forth through time as a young boy Link and an older teenaged Link, with some degrees of cause-and-effect going on. It's not as tied together as one might hope, but it still helps to add more freshness to old areas and helps continue the game's sense of wonder and discovery.

In the end, Zelda is great at what it does best: provide hours upon hours of excellent entertainment. In terms of game design and gameplay, it still stands as an absolute masterpiece and while its graphics and technology have dated a bit, it's still not an ugly game, just one that shows its age. There's a lot to do and see and moments of ridiculous joy, whether it's riding Epona the horse for the first time, taking down a classic boss, or wandering the fields of Hyrule and interacting with its denizens. The game shows a little comedy and drama, but the focus is on the game and the game is all about fun. 9/10.

Summary: My favorite game of all time
Comment: The legend of Zelda has always been a series that continually delivers amazing games that are at the top of their class. The legend of Zelda has always been my favorite video game series of all time since I was little and their games continually suck away hours of my life. This is the game that made me truly love gaming(Before I just did it for fun). It also set the stage for other great games such as majoras mask, wind waker, and twilight princess.

Gameplay: If you have played any of the other Zelda games, you will know that you play as Link, a young Kokiry boy who must go out on the adventure of a lifetime to defeat the evil Ganondorf and save Princess Zelda. The controls are flawless. You just move the analog stick to make Link move, move forward and press A to roll, press B to use your sword, the C buttons are home to you other weapons such as the bow, hookshot, and the like. This game introduced the revolutionary lock on system where you just pressed Z, and staid locked on to an enemy, which meant no more aimless sword swinging, it realy made the combat more managable, and much more fun, Like any Zelda game there is a huge overworld to explore. You have grassy plains, tall volcanic mountains, serene lakes, sandy deserts, difeerent towns and villages, and lots to do. The overworld is just enourmes, esspecially for an N64 game. Hyrule feild stretches in all directions. One of the great things about traveling is part way through the game, you will get a trusty horse named Epona. Riding around hyrule feild is just realy addicting. There are many great minigames to do as well, such as the shooting gallery, bombochu bowling, selling mask, and fishing, yes fishing. There are also special task to do such as collecting ten special poes(Huge ghost that appear in hyrule feild), or collecting 100 Skulltullas(Spiders of a horrible curse). The meat and Potatoes is of course the dungeons. Each dungeon is completley uniqe and different than the last one and shows off alot of great elements. There are many challenging puzzles that reward you when you figure them out. You raise and lower water, look for paths that are invisible with the lens of trooth, push giant blocks with the silver gauntlets, use the megaton hammer to push blocks, and much much more. Each dungeon is just very well crafted that it is hard to beleive that it came out in 1998. There are many feirce enemies in each dungeon that fight to put an end to your quest such as Stalfos, bats, lizolfos, armos, iron knuckles, jellyfish, tektikes, readeds, skulltullas, and so many more. The boss battles are each intricitley desighned and completely different than thre last in the way they look and fight. The boss battle with Ganon at the end is one of my all time favorite final battles ever(only rivald by the fight in twilight princess, and Mother brain). The difficulty is always just right with the challenges and enemys getting toupher as you go on. Through the game you get alot of fantastic weapons to use, such as a bow, hookshot, megaton hammer, hovor boots, silver gauntlets, boomerangs, and much more. Each is always put to good use and none of them ever go absolete and are awlays usefull the whole way through One of the big mechanics is of course the ocarina itself, you play it manually with the button layout being like the holes in the real thing. You can change day into night, transport across the world map, and open passage ways with you trusty instrument, and much more. The biggest suprise is after you get the Master sword and travel forard in time seven years. Time travel is a huge element in this game as some things you do as a child will effect the things you do as an adult, and vice versa. there are also different things avalible to do in each time and it is a blast to go between two time periods and it realy makes you feel powerfull. Nore matter which aspect of the gameplay I am talking about, I cannot find fault anywhere, absolutely perfect.

Story: Hyrule was created by din Nyrule, and Farore, they left behinf the triforce which lies in the Sacerd realm. Many years later, an Evil Man named Ganondorf seeks the triforce and Places a curse on the deku tree, and does other horible things to many races . The deku tree tells navi, the fairy that she must awaken Link as he has been having a nightmare about the evil man. Link goes to get a sword and Sheild, and goes to see the great Deku tree who asks him to rid the curse. Link succeeds but finds out that he is far to late. Before dying, the Deku tree tells him the legond of the triforce and gives him the spirituall stone of the forest, the Kokirys emerald, and then tells him to go to hyrule castle to meet nPrincess Zelda. Link goes to hyrule castle, meets princess Zelda Who tells him of the dreams she has been having about Ganondorf and Ask Link to get the other two stones, Link obliges and gets them but finds that it is to late As princess Zelda and Impa flee hyrule catsle, Zelda throws him the Ocarina of time. Link then comes face to face with Ganondorf and gets a taste of his power. Zelda then Telapethacally teaches him the song of time. Link goes to the Temple of Time and Plays it at the alter where the stones are placed and opens the secret chamber where he finds the Master Sword. Link being the legendary hero, takes the master sword, but finds that he has fallen into Ganondorfs trap. He is then seald in time for seven years where he is awakened by the sage of light Rareu. Link discovers that he is now an Adult. and instructs him to find and awaken the other sages. This is where the game gets epic, but I wont spoil anymore fore, suffice it to say it is a great story that is very well told and will keep you wanting to find out what happens next.

Graphics: These graphics were truly groundbraking and ahead of their time back in 1998. The moment you step out into hyrule feild and se the scale and distance you will be mesmerized. The game shows off some fantastic day and night sequences as well as many different colors. Hyrule market looks and feels alive, the kakariko village will look like a town with houses and shops. The desert esspecially is arguablly the best way to show off the N64s power with snadstorms and wind effects. The Charecter models are great for Lnik, to Zelda, To Ganondorf, to the bosses, to even the NPCs. The enemys realy look feirce and different. These graphics truly set the standerd in 1998.

Sound: The sound effects themselves are Spectacular like the flowing water, the clank of a sword hitting a wall or an enemy, the enemy sounds when thay are struck bu the sword or when they are attacking, Lniks yelps, and much more. The game features a brilliant musicalll score, Koji kondos work is reminiscent of John williams almost, and that is not a comparison I make lightly. You will hum the beat of the lost woods, love the powerfull melody of the temple of time, be entranced by the song of storms, there is just so many great melodys that I have lost count. The song of time is truly memorable as well as all of the others. My only complaint might be the lack of the traditional overworld thing and Navis annoying hey listen screams, but these are all tossed aside once you hear Koji Kondos work at its finest with the lost woods theme and song of time.

Replay Value: I still play this game nonstop. It truly proves that Amazing agameplay oulives any other aspect of a game. There is just so much to do and so much to see and so many places to explore that you will never want to drop the conntroller.

This game is My favorite game of all time and is a must buy for any N64 owner, or enouph of a reason to get one if you do not have one already. It is also avalible on the Wii vertuall console and is well worth the download. This is the game of my Childhood and I cannont stress enoph how much you need to get this game.

Summary: The King of all Games...
Comment: I can easily say that this is the best game I have ever played. Probably the first time I played it was when I was about 6 or 7, and the game itself was a journey I would never forget. It took me a while to beat it though at my age, for example getting stuck at the last part of Forest Temple, took me almost a year to get past that part. Even after I played this game and moved onto other games, many fond memories of this game remain with me to this day, almost ten years later. Of course I played it many more times, and it never got boring as other games might.

There so many things about this game that made it stand out above every other game I've played in my games, the excellent graphics it had in its time, the unforgettable atmosphere contained in every dungeon, not one dungeon was a disappointment, in fact each dungeon had been a favorite at one time or another. The music was another superior factor in this game that supported its reign as my favorite game, the music in the Lost Forest, Gerudo Valley, Zora's Domain, and bascially the entire soundtrack was memorable, my favorite to this day still remains to be the Last Battle track, capturing the epic feel of that fight.

The gameplay is the best ever to this day, many colorful lands, beautiful scenery and different locales seemed so vivid, that it is an adventure in itself, to explore. Your arsenal of weapons that you get throughout the game are quite fun to use, such as a large sledgehammer, a bow that is soon endowed with elemental powers, a mask allowing you to see hidden things that the natural eye would never see, bombs, and others.

If you have a N64, I highly recommend you buy this title, but hurry before the prices rise as this game is gradually increasing, an antiquity it is becoming. I am pretty sure I will play this game many more times throughout my life, it will never get old to me.

A perfect 5/5.

Summary: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
