In the opening seconds of this solo outing, former Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness peels off the line like a Chevy hotrod. Combining gritty punk attitude, honky-tonk toughness, and rockabilly swagger, Ness spins tales of depravity ("Crime Don't Pay," "Ballad of a Lonely Man") that would be downright depressing if they weren't so foot-tappingly catchy. A world-weary tough guy--equal parts Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Johnny Rotten--Ness is a true homegrown talent, combining his trademark growl and wire-taut guitar playing with dramatic, captivating storytelling. Appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Brian Setzer, and members of the Royal Crown Revue add to this record's already formidable mix, but Ness is really the star, proving at every turn that there can be life after punk without coming anywhere close to selling out. --Donovan Finn

Customer Rating: Summary: cheating at solitaire-mike ness Comment: This CD really shows Mr. Ness's influences. Since I share many of them, I thoughly enjoyed this CD. It's emotional and edgy and generally kicks [...]. Dope Fiend Blues and his version of Long Black Veil really stand out. While this is different than Social D. it still has that ragged edge I like so well from them. Also try Under The Influences from Mike Ness, excellent stuff.
Customer Rating: Summary: Unbelievably good Comment: This cd is fantastic. Well written songs, the usual Ness lyrics of love, life, addiction, and death. Check out the song "If You Leave Before Me". Love at it's strongest. I'd give it 25 stars if I could. A definite must-have for all Social Distortion fans.
Customer Rating: Summary: True Comment: I came to love Social Distortion from the 'hard rock' side of the fence. Although I've always admired the tenacity, energy, and brutal honesty of punk rock; it rarely had sound/feel I craved. For me Social Distortion melded the two worlds - honest feelings behind the music and a great sound! A big plus is the varied styles/sound of their various records. You get punk, hard rock, metal, blues, rockabilly, and country thrown into the mixer together with Mike Ness's harsh growl reflecting on a life of poor choices, addiction, consequences, retribution, friendship, redemption, and love. That is what rock and roll is all about!
On this solo disc, Cheating At Solitaire, you get all of Mike Ness's angst and energy in a very bluesy, rockabilly, and country influenced album. Don't mistakenly think this falls into that awful 'new country' genre of endlessly twangy notes and cute little phrases. This is a set of awesome bluesy rockin' tunes ('Dope Fiend Blues', 'Charmed Life'...) with a large dose of old school country ('Ballad Of A Lonely Man', the fantastic Bob Dylan cover 'Don't Think Twice'...) and rockabilly ('Send Her Back'...)! Well worth the price of admisson!!!!
If you get a chance to see him live, solo or with Social Distortion, grab it. It is a great rock and roll experience!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great listening Comment: This is a great CD. Mike Ness is truly outstanding as a solo artist. Don't get me wrong, I love Social Distortion, but this is a nice, slight change. "Don't Think Twice" is a real hit. The bluesy, rockabilly sound of this CD makes it a winner.
Customer Rating: Summary: It's OK, Not Great Comment: I'm a big fan of Social Distortion, so I was excited to check out this CD. I always liked the rockabilly influences in Social Distortion, but for my taste this one is too rockabilly. Perhaps unfairly, I was looking for more Social Distortion. If you're really into rockabilly, I would have to say that this is an album that you should check out. Also give a listen to Reverend Horton Heat.
