Editorial Reviews:

At first glance, this doesn't seem like conductor Riccardo Muti's cup of tea. It's a work without many subtleties, one that seems to need a policeman more than an interpreter. But Muti lets it rip--the joyous moments are superb, the mock-sentimental moments charming, changes in rhythm properly jarring, and the energy level very high. Soprano Arleen Auger almost makes her high-flying part seem simple. Warning: The louds are very loud. --Robert Levine

Customer Rating: Summary: Timeless, Moving and Unforgettable Comment: The sort of music you can listen to on a dark and stormy night or when celebrating a huge victory in life. Beautifully done all the way around.
Customer Rating: Summary: Carmina Burana is beautiful and intense! Comment: I watched the Carmina Burana musical many years ago in Utah, and ever since I watched it I just love the music. I love the intensity and the power that comes from it!
Customer Rating: Summary: Very good LSO mp3 album! Comment: This was the first mp3 album I ever purchased, and I am really pleased with what I bought. The LSO plays very well and the choir and soloists all sound extraordinary. Hickox leads the orchestra in a dazzling performance of this classic work. This was also the first time I ever heard Orff's masterpiece, and this recording was an excellent choice! A very good buy, well worth it, in my opinion!
Customer Rating: Summary: Not nearly as bad as you might think Comment: Yes, it's true that the audio will cause a lot of problems while you're listening to this CD. You have to turn the volume WAY up during soft passages, and you have to turn the colume WAY down during loud, energetic ballads. But all we have to do is get used to it and focus more on Carmina itself.
Maestro Muti is way up there with Jochum, Dutoit, and Thielemann. His interpretation is never bland, and he never stresses anything at all (except maybe fast tempi here and there, but it's still good). The Philharmonia is one of my favorite orchestras, and it still didn't disappoint me with this piece. They play fantastically well from beginning to end. The Philharmonia Chorus is another treat; brilliant diction all around.
Arleen Auger strikes oil with Orff's scenic cantata. She has the sensitivity and the power, though she doesn't have the same amount of intelligence as Gundula Janowitz's. John van Kesteren is like any other tenor for the "Roasted Swan", so nothing special here. And finally, Johnathan Summer is as good as all the other baritones for Carmina. His "In Taberna" is not to be missed.
So, if you don't mind the eccentric audio, then you won't have any problems with this recording.
Customer Rating: Summary: This is the one to purchase Comment: Simply excellent. One reviewer faulted this recording for its disparity in volume (i.e., decibels, not space occupied). Ignore that review. If you've spent more than $50 on your sound system and you're not legally deaf, this is the recording to acquire.
