The first step to preventing water damage to your home is finding out when and where the water is entering the house. For less than you’d pay for two fast-food meals, you could buy yourself year-round protection and peace of mind—and possibly prevent thousands of dollars in water damage, not to mention increases in your homeowner’s insurance. The battery-operated unit has an automatic sensor that emits a loud, piercing alarm—similar to a smoke detector’s—when it comes in contact with water. Simply place the alarm near a washing machine, inside of a sump pump pit, on floor of a basement or crawlspace, or wherever you suspect water entry. Comment: Purchased three of these devices. My son has them in his home and has saved him water damage. I placed one of mine near the washing machine where I have had water leaks. The others are going under sinks. I haven't had any go off yet, so I can not comment on reliability. The 5 stars are from my son's experience.

Summary: Fantastic Product - Must Have if you have a basement.
Comment: After several problems with backing up sewer line (finally fixed permanently), we purchased this warning device to alert us before any water or sewage back up got beyond the drain. Fortunately our sewer line is fixed (blocked by a toy our kids dropped in the drain), but this unit has performed flawlessly every time we have tested it. If you have a basement and have the likelihood of water or sewage backing up the drains, or flooding, you must have this unit. The detector lies by the drain and sends a wireless signal to the alarm that you can place anywhere in your home. The alarm sound is loud enough to get your attention. It will give you time to save your valuables before flooding gets worse.

Comment: This item is compact and easy to place. Simple cover removal makes battery replacement a snap. The only thing I would improve is making it louder.

Comment: I purchased two of these after suffering a disastrous water pipe leak in a finished, carpeted and furnished basement, a leak that went undetected for about 24 hours. The cases of my Zircon detectors look exactly like this one, but they have a red-on-white label rather than the white-on-blue shown in the Amazon listing. I'm not sure whether this indicates a newer version or what. That said, the ones I have work perfectly. Wet a finger and hold it against the two exposed metal strips, and the detector quickly begins sounding the alarm--in Morse Code!
That's right, these (at least the red-on-white labeled ones) sound out the international distress signal: three short beeps, three long beeps, and three short beeps again, Morse code for the letters S-O-S. Not owning an audiometer, I cannot say what the alarm is in decibels, but I do believe it's loud enough to be heard upstairs, though perhaps not from one end of the house to the other. However, if one is standing above the basement room when the alarm activates, it will definitely be heard (assuming that one is not hard of hearing, of course).
I notice that some reviewers find fault with the units for wearing out prematurely. While I cannot speak to that, having had these units for only a few weeks, I feel that, at about ten dollars apiece, even if they need to be replaced yearly, the cost is negligible for the security they provide. So far, I am pleased and impressed with these alarms--which will certainly let the homeowner know that something is wet even if he or she doesn't understand Morse code!
