Abreva is the only non-prescription cold sore medicine approved by the FDA. | What is Abreva? Abreva is the only non-prescription cold sore medicine FDA approved to shorten healing time and duration of symptoms. That's why it's the number one Pharmacist recommended cold sore medication. While other products just soothe, Abreva goes deep in the skin to help heal cold sores from the inside out...Fast! Abreva is available in two formats; a convenient tube to keep Abreva ever-ready at home, and now a new easy-to-use pump for a clean and easy application on the go. When Should I Use Abreva? Start applying Abreva the moment you feel a cold sore coming on, when you feel that tingle, itch and/or burning sensation. If you miss the tingle stage, start using Abreva as soon as you can, and apply it five times a day until your cold sore is healed. How Does Abreva Work? Abreva contains 10 percent Docosanol, a unique patented active ingredient that helps protect healthy cells from the cold sore virus. As Abreva helps the healthy cells defend the cold sore virus, the virus has a difficult time infecting more and more cells. This means cold sores heal faster and symptoms don't last as long. Why Use Abreva? Other cold sore treatments only relieve symptoms, so they can't match the healing power of Abreva. Just check out the interactive demo to see the Abreva difference. Plus, Abreva offers a Money-Back Guaranteee. If you aren't completely satisfied for any reason, save your receipt and remaining product, and call 1-877-709-3539 to receive a full refund. Customer Rating: Summary: Better than prescription Comment: I've been dealing with cold sores as long as I can remember and am always on the look out for any product that will help me battle them. I've tried just about every product generally available, and some prescription drugs. In the end, Abreva has always worked best for me. I always keep two tubes on hand. One tube is usually enough to make it through one breakout - sometimes I need around 1-1/2. It stops me from breaking out if I apply when I feel the "tingle", and is usually resolved fairly quickly so I don't have to use a lot. If I apply after a sore breaks out, the Abreva seems to pull the pus out of the sores faster so the sore can dry out and heal faster (other products just seem to fill the sores more and it never goes away).
The only thing I can think of to improve on this product is if they could make a way to make the gel clear/less noticeable. It's a bit of a hassle when you need to use this product and you have to present yourself in public places because there will inevitably (at least for me) be some evidence of having some weird white paste slathered all over your mouth... but I suppose it's always more noticeable when you're the one with the sore than to those who aren't and not really giving it a second thought.
I recommend a try if you have cold sores. It's not a cure-all, but it's the best of what's available.
Customer Rating: Summary: NO GOOD Comment: Yes, Abreva will stop an up-bust of cold sores any time you apply this product when you get that tingling sensation. I have been using it for the past 6 month and it has worked well. The problem is that those white points on my lips have become bumps. Before using this product I would have to stretch my lips in order to see those white points where cold sores grow from. Now my lips are now permanently bumpy that I am even ashamed to kiss my wife on her lips afraid she my feel the ruff sources of my lips. I say, this product has worsened my situation and would not recommend it to anyone.
Customer Rating: Summary: Proven twice Comment: My wife and I both get cold sores. We both agreed it shortened the time to heal. It seemed to not grow a large and within 3 days it was reducing.
Customer Rating: Summary: FDA can suck my nads. Comment: I had a pretty small outbreak, but it was pretty inconvenient so I tried many folk remedies and out of frustration finally caved, went to my drugstore, and bought a 2g tube for $17
This product did not help relive pain, or speed my healing time.
My personal reaction was a quickly spreading sore and a tube of Campho-Phenique (which did a much better job).
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
Customer Rating: Summary: Does what it says. Comment: Abreva works. It does exactly what it says which is speeding up the healing time. I just had one of those cold sores that wasn't so much on my lip but more right below it (more on my face). You know, the really noticeable ones. Normally these last 2+ weeks. The redness would stay for up to 3 weeks. Hideous. Abreva cut that down to one week with minor redness. Mind you I was also icing the hell out of it, which I also recommend (ice it for 10-15 minutes, 4-5 times a day). I've had much smaller cold sores that it would heal overnight. Friggin' brilliant.
The first time I used it, I made the naive assumption that it "cures" cold sores. I get the feeling that this assumption is held by most nay-sayers of Abreva. I used it for one day and then tried all of the "home remedies". Vinegar, tooth paste, sacrificing lambs, you name it. Nope. Damn near a month of wearing a scarf everywhere in public (it was winter anyways).
So yeah, it works. Use it as directed or more. Use ice to subdue the swelling and tingling.
