This bi- monthly magazine is written with the manager in mind, with articles that talk about marketing, new product suggestions, kitchen machinery, and other things restaurant- related.
Since this publication is geared toward the operation of a successful restaurant, it tends to feature articles that are more informative than entertaining. You won't find many personal stories here or anything like that. This magazine is dedicated to management, and it does a very good job conveying information about new products and services in this restaurant industry. There are a few recipes offered in each issue, too. These help give food service management some ideas on creative cooking and they help break up the monotony of the factual component of a magazine like this one.
Because of its business focus, this publication can be counted on for plenty of advertisements about things related to the running and functioning of a restaurant. You can expect to see ads for stoves, disposal units, dishwashers, and the like. There are occasional coupons in each issue as well, but they are usually for money off of bulk purchases, like a case of canned goods.
I appreciate "Restaurants & Institutions" for its informative format but I can see how most other people will not find much of value here. I work as a manager of a hotel that has a restaurant, so I can appreciate the cost- cutting advice and the general information about new products and services. Unless one works in the industry or close to it, there is probably not much enjoyable reading in this magazine to be found. But for those who manage or own a restaurant, "Restaurants & Institutions" is a very good publication, chock full of advice and tips for the serious food service manager.
