Customer Rating: Summary: NEVER RECEIVED MY MAGAZINE!!! Comment: This is more of a review for Magazine Express, Inc. They are incompetent! I ordered my magazine in February and it is now almost September. I have contacted them several times and they say they are going to get back in touch with me but never do. If you are thinking of ordering this magazine go directly to the publisher!
Customer Rating: Summary: tight magazine top tier Journalism Comment: i have the issues with Rick James, James Brown, Miles Davis and dug the Al Green one. this Magazine covers Funk, Soul, Hip-Hop and so much more.i enjoy the Q&A and with all the sessions musicians and artists,etc.. so much is covered and thensome.i wish it came out more and it does cost a little sumthin, sumthin but it is worth every cent. that one with Bill Withers is worth checking out as well. not many music magazines today are talking about much of anything. this is a refreshing reminder of the importance of reading and enjoying Music.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wax poetics Comment: I can't really rate it because we haven't received it as of 2/10/08. I know magazine subsciptions take a number of weeks to arrive though.
Customer Rating: Summary: A must read for the 30+ hip hopper. Comment: If you remember Cold Crush, Grandmixer DST, Jazzy Five...this is for you.
Great articles. Advertisements for great new music and mixes...get an issue and feel the love.
Customer Rating: Summary: For Creators of Music, fans of funk & hip-hop, here's your holy book Comment: This magazine hit me over the head much the same as my favorite peices of music did when I first heard them. At first I ignored this magazine for the intital year or so of it's inception, until finally some artists I knew appeared on the cover. What can I say? I just subscribed after the P-Funk Issue. There is nothing like this being produced in America today. While a magazine like Rolling Stone will give you historical articles concerning Rock figures, Wax Poetics gives you interviews featuring the artists of Funk, Soul, Disco, Jazz, R&B, and early hip hop, whether legendary, or unsung. For fans of funk music, you get coverage that funk has never had, imagine taking Rickey Vincents book, "Funk", and interviewing the artists in the book every other month. I've read articles on Randy Mueller of Brass Construction, Johnny Griggs, James Browns percussionist, the Mizell Brothers, James Browns drummer, and the issue featuring the P-Funk mob is the most thorough, comprehensive P-Funk story in print to date.
The late sixties through the eighties is the main focus of the magazine, basically encompassing the foundations of hip hop in Funk, Soul, Jazz and Reggae, and faboulous stories on the early practioners of hip hop. I've always been fascinated by stories of how hip hop started, as well as being a huge fan of funk, and i've always ate up any information on how that transformation was made, as well as wanting to know what music our hip hop hero's were inspired by before they knew there was a hip hop.
Wax Poetics is a beautiful magazine linking generations. It's like an arhaeological project. So many stories play out beautifully, and with the types of colorful characters you get in music, no story is ever dull.
Wax Poetics will also inspire any musician because the interviewers always are as fascinated by the musicians creative process as any musical student would be. It's also highly collectible, and gives you beautiful color and black and white, and often, full page photos of whomever is being interviewed.
It's an incredible magazine because it could link several generations of fans of African-American and African based ( Afro-Beat, Salsa, Reggae, Brazillian ) music. I'm 25, and I can share it with my 75 year old father, and my 40 year old brother, and my mom is currently reading issue #21, which has a James Brown tribute. Hope this magazine only goes on to become bigger & deffer.
