Editorial Reviews:

For much of the 90’s the 2-D realm consisted of a battle between Capcom’s stars and the 2-D fighters from rival SNK. Fans mourned when SNK went out of business a couple years ago, but Capcom has resurrected its enemies for yet another battle in Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO.

The game offers a remarkable assortment of fighters, fighting styles, and variety of play. Forty characters--each with their own special powers, attacks, timing issues, personalities, and sound bites--get magnified three-fold by three separate "-isms" which alter their powers, and three "grooves," which mix them up yet again. There’s a lot to learn and it ensures that playing a foe of equal skill is never dull because you can never be sure what character he’s going to pick and how that character will fight.

The graphics are generally decent, though some of these fighters look like they haven’t been spiffed up for today’s console systems. The older Street Fighter guys look just plain bad next to newly added characters from the SNK stable. But the animation is smooth, the backgrounds have been significantly redone and feature new, often startling animations, and the special effects are just plain awesome. The audio is pretty much the same old themes that Capcom has been using for the better part of a decade now.

All told there’s very little reason for PS2 or GameCube gamers to own this game, other than the SNK characters. The Xbox version is playable over Xbox Live (sold separately), which is a big advantage--everyone knows that these games, born of arcade coin-ops, are meant to be played competitively. The service does nothing to match players of equal skill, but that’s pretty similar to the experience in an arcade. The ability to start up a relatively lag free game at a moment’s notice and trade trash talk with another gamer from around the world is just priceless, and a welcome addition to the series. --Andrew S. Pros:

  • Forty fighters from two video game stables
  • Xbox Live play is smooth and mostly lag free
Cons:
  • Dated graphics
  • Inadequate manual

Summary: NOT BACKWARD COMPATIBLE FOR 360
Comment: I bought this game thinking it was backward compatible with the 360 but it wasn't mainly my fault for not checking on XBOX's Website, so i have the game but haven't been able to play it. I gave it 5 stars cause i know it's a fun game, but 2 stars because a great game like this should be backward compatible.

Summary: From a old neogeo gamer on snk and capcon.
Comment: Ok here's my rant. One I've not played this game (but I'm going buy it shortly). Two the original King of Fighters was original based on characters from Fatal fury (Guess no one remembers that one). They made so many after the first one. I lost count (witch was base on 3 vs. 3 characters, not like one on one you have today in the KOF games). Second. SNK had allot great fighting games besides King of Fighters. World Heroes 1 & 2, Fatal fury 1& 2. Samurai Showdown 1 & 2. Now I'm happy to see Samurai Showdown being coming back that was a cool fighting game and the first one was cool. So I'm going buy the part V (where did 3&4 go? anyone know). When it comes out this month. But what makes me sad is snk (neogeo) is own by capcon who wont release games like Worlds Heroes or Ghost Ryder airplane shooter based on ww2. These would be great for xbox and alot of fun. Guess I'm writing cause never like KOF. But must say Street fighter 2 was the best came game that ever came out of capcon. I wish SNK would come out with some old classics like Capcon just did. And if anyone from Capcon reads this you need to come out with a version of Dark Stalkers 1 or 2 for Xbox your Capcon Fighting Evolutions doesn't cut it. Dark Stalkers Rocked we need whole version that would be one of the best. Hope like my rant and some out there knows what I'm talking about. Hopefully someone from SNK or Capcon will read this.

Summary: 4 problems with this game...
Comment: First off this is worth picking up if you are a fan of 2d fighting games , hopefully xbox will release more like this.

problem 1: "snk"? F*** snk , lets get back to the good ol days of Marvel vs. Capcom.

problem 2: the computer is pretty much like the one cheap a** friend you have who sits in a corner shooting fire bolts every time you get up, and using "super special moves" as soon as they get low on health

3: can someone please explain why EVERYONE can do the Shiyruken in this? I know snk is just a knockoff of streetfighter, but come on, cant they think of one person that doesnt dress and fight like, or at the very least isnt named after, ryu?

4: I think about 9 people in the world own this, Ive only seen it in a store once, and no one is ever online in this game.

other than that this is awesome, and should do the trick if your waiting to get the street fighter anniversery set.

Summary: The best 2D fighter for the Xbox at the moment.
Comment: Having not played a Street Fighter game since Doule Impact on the DC, I figured this'd be a good game to get back into everything with. I had played Capcom vs SNK in arcades a few times but wasn't so sure of the concept. So many different fighters to pick, did all of them really have their own advantages? Yes. Each and every character is unique in their own way, and it's a blast to learn how to use each one effectively. I haven't had this much fun in a 2D fighting game since I first played SF2 back in 1991.

CvsSNK2 is easy to get into. You get a ton of fighters to go through, and if you don't know how to do their moves, just pause the game and pull up the command list. I'm glad to see this option being more common in fighting games. It would've been a great help back in the early/mid 90's. If you've played an SF or KoF game before, then you know what's here and how to play. But before really starting the game, you can pick one 6 Grooves. These give you some extra abilities during fighting...like parrying, air blocks, safe falls, etc. And they also determine how your special move meter is used. If you like using more than one special move in a row, then go with the 'C' Groove and use up to 3 super special moves one right after the other once it's filled up. If you'd rather go with one huge combo, go with one of the others that lets you do just that. It seems a little silly at first, but if you want to get a high score, learning which Groove best suits you is manditory (I usually stick with 'N'). You get points for a lot of different things. Combos is an obvious one, time, health, max combo reached, two-hit throws, special move finish, Dramatic KO finish, and many more. It's fun trying to get as many bonuses as possible at the end of a match. I've been trying to go for 3500 points since I got the game back in January.

The arcade mode isn't very tough. It's 5-7 matches (5 normally, one optional boss before the 5th real match, and one of two end bosses if you meet the requirements) long and you can go through it in less than 10 minutes. Then there's the Survival mode, where you go through EVERY SINGLE FIGHTER ON THE ROASTER with your own lonesome fighter, just so you can get unlimited points to make your own custom Groove the best. There's also the usual two-player VS mode which is always fun, and of course the Online mode. CvsS2 actually has a good little online following, and you're bound to find a few skilled opponents when you go on Live. Feature in this version of CvS2 is the EO mode, which lets you be incredibly cheap. You can't do Ken's Dragon Punch (like me)? Well just set the controls to EO mode and every single one of his special moves (even supers) can be executed with one move of the right thumbstick. Remember how Blanka used to do his rolling attack(s) without charging or anything? Well now you can do the same thing. Be warned for setting it to EO on the arcade mode- it doesn't make for much of a challenge obviously, even on the highest difficulty setting. It could make Survival a little easier though...

The graphics aren't anything to brag about. The character sprites are very pixilated and look about early PSone quality. That's not saying that they're poorly animated or anything, but you'll notice their outlines could've used a lot of work. Say maybe the quality that was put into SF: 3rd Strike. That would've been very nice. But all of the characters have a lot of detail put into them with a lot of personality for "just" a 2D sprite. Backgrounds have some 3D effects like windmills, and they're pretty generic. Some of the things look like Capcom/SNK just rushed through with them to have something to look at while you're waiting for your opponent to get back up. But the firey background when fighting the real end bosses is flat out sweet.

The music and voices are good though. The main menu theme gets annoying fast and you'll rush through it, but the tracks used in the levels is pretty good. While the number of stages is limited, there's a good variety of music genres used. And of course the music when fighting God/Ultimate Rugal and Shin Akuma is some of the coolest. It actually sounds like end boss music. Each character has their own voice, and while they don't say that much, they fit their personalities. Some of the better ones include Iori and Chun-Li. But the announcer, oh is he something. He has some of the worst pronunciation I've ever heard. Just wait until you hear him say "Capcom vs SNK 2" at the title screen. He says these incredibly lame phrases in between fights like "LOOK AT THE EXPRESSION ON THEIR FACES". And "BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER TO ME...BECAUSE THE BOTTOM LINE IS, THAT THIS. TEAM. HAS. WON!". Yeah, he'll be getting on your nerves pretty quick. Also, there seems to be an error with the sound when you finish a match with a Dramtic KO. If you have one more round after a Dramatic KO, the music will mute, and you'll fight the next match with no sound. This only lasts for whoever you're fighting. It'll be back in the next fight. I've heard that playing the game online once will clear this up and fix it for the offline game. 'just thought I'd let you know.

Hopefully this game will help popularize SNK/King of Fighters a little more so people actually give their games a chance. Capcom's the only company aside from Sammy with their Guity Gear games, that has much of a chance in the 2D fighting world sadly. SNK vs Capcom: Chaos is coming out soon, which should be even better than this. CvsS2EO is great if you're a fan of 2D fighters, or if you haven't even played one in a long time like I have. And for a collectability note, this game is also out of print. So you should go for it while you still can. Look at how much Marvel vs Capcom 2's going for on Xbox and ps2.
