Editorial Reviews:

The Hollywood concept shorthand for Todd Graff's semi-autobiographical musical comedy may be Fame-meets-Meatballs, but the film (nominated for the Grand Jury prize at the '03 Sundance Film Festival) has an energetic musical heart all its own. The original songs of Michael Gore (the original Fame) and Lynn Ahrens (Schoolhouse Rock, the Broadway adaptation of Ragtime) revolve around poles of upbeat gospel fervor ("Here's Where I Stand," "How Shall I See You Through My Tears") and introspective ballads ("I Sing For You"), while the score's choice of covers initially echo those concerns via Todd Rundgren's "The Want of a Nail" and the Stones' "Wild Horses," respectively. But the teen-voiced covers of Sondheim's middle-age missive "The Ladies Who Lunch" and Bacharach/David's loopy "Turkey Lurkey Time" also underscore its youthful sense of anything-goes abandon. The pop songs that round out the collection are a well-chosen and emotionally sympatico lot, especially the Replacements' "Skyway", the Wonder Stuff's "The Size of a Cow" and even Warren Wiebe's weepy ballad "I Believe in Us." This enhanced CD features include behind the scenes footage, film trailer, cast photos, and bios. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Rating: Summary: CAMP DELIGHT Comment: Just like the winning film it underscores, this soundtrack is a delight form start to finish. Unlike many of the naysayers who have reviewed this before me, I LOVE the inclusion of the incidental pop music that appeared in the film, along with the many "performance" numbers. Skyway is one of the most evocative moments in the movie, and it's great having a recording of it - sort of like a bonus! And the wonderful, fresh versions of Sondheim and Bacharach classics are welcome additions to anyone's musical theatre library. Infectious and fun!
Customer Rating: Summary: What an awesome Soundtrack Comment: I would recommend this CD to anyone that is a true lover of music. If you haven't seen the movie yet, stop reading my review for the soundtrack and go buy the movie.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Soundtrack Comment: I picked up the soundtrack and the movie at the same time not knowing what it would be about. To my pleasant surprise I enjoyed both the movie and soundtrack. If you enjoy the movie it is worth it to get the soundtrack. You won't be disappointed. I gave it a 4 because of the other songs at the end.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fun! Comment: Ok, so this movie doesn't have life altering properties or deal with any major problems, but to those of us who were "band geeks", "drama nerds", or just plain "outcasts"; well, I can't spek for everyone, but as a former "band geek" AND "drama nerd" I find this film very fun and the music was (in a way) healing.
I'd not ever heard the original verson of "Century Plant", and when I did I have to say that I liked the re-make in the film better.
Two different Sunday afternoons I found myself sitting glued to the TV because this movie was on. It's so easy for me to relate, and I remember feeling and thinking many of the things that the characters said and felt. While watching such an entertaining film I went back to my teen years and thought of working on the chorus productions and the drama club plays. Oh, the fun and teen angst that we all were dealing with, we didn't know what life was and how good we really had it! Oh, to be young again!
I'll be the first to say that if you're looking for something "meaty" or a movie that keeps you guessing and makes you think, then you really won't find it here. But if you've had a bad day (or week) and just need something to unwind and a film that won't make you think, but make you smile then you're in the right place! You'll find yourself tapping your toes and maybe even humming or singing along!
Rent it, buy it, either way you'll have a good time!
Customer Rating: Summary: Camp Comment: I am so thankful for this soundtrack; it was shipped in due time, and has sparked some creativity in my mind for future shows and musical arrangements. Thanks!
