Customer Rating: Summary: Ultimate Meal is ultimate nutrition Comment: This is a very good meal replacement product. Nutrition-wise it's far superior to most meals these days, and it actually tastes okay, too. With all the garbage in processed foods, it's hard to find anything to eat that is both nutritious and cheap. For both breakfast and lunch the Ultimate Meal works out to about $2 per day. For consumption at work, on the go, on the road or even at home, I rely on it to get me through the day. Customer Rating: Summary: Over time, you appreciate it more. . . Comment: Years ago I began using this as a breakfast smoothie and followed the directions. Now I mix it with all or some of the following: All Bran, Frozen Blueberries, Frozen Bananas, Frozen Cherry Tomatoes, Soy Milk, Orange Juice, Apples, Strawberries, Peaches, and, occasionally, salad, if I'm having it for supper. I love it! It is loaded with nutrients, as far as I can tell, and the flavor is great when it is made my way and not the way they recommend. The blueberries change the color from green to purple, so it also looks great! I love this stuff! Sometimes I even add a calcium or vitamin D tablet. Customer Rating: Summary: Used for years, great product Comment: First things first: when you're ready for health, you might want to consider putting taste aside for a time. This product surpasses most in its class in terms of of taste, but if you want something sweet and sugary, you've come to the wrong product. If you're used to the American Diet (junk) then it will take time for your tastes to adjust, but they will, and you can't beat this product, or at lest, you'd have to use a lot of others to come close. I've used it for years. I don't think it's a complete meal replacement long-term although some have had success in that department. The body needs more. But if you're looking for a good source of nutrition that mixes easily and is packed with good stuff, here it is. And oh, if you can't figure out how to use a spoon to measure out one third cup, you can Google it. Not too tough. Customer Rating: Summary: overwhelming Comment: I know I shouldn't write a review after giving something just one try, but sometimes a beginner's point of view is valuable...
I followed the directions to the letter (banana, apple, 10 oz water, 1/3 cup powder, blend) at 7:37am this morning. It says to drink it in 5 to 15 minutes. It's 9:38am now and I've still got 19% of it to go. So, maybe that's why it holds you for 3-4 hours... because you're still drinking it.
Anyway, let's just say it's a challenge to get down. It's VERY green and frothy and yes, I "chewed each mouthful". It started out surprisingly sweet (and not in a good way. what is that? stevia?) Apart from whole fruit, I don't eat sweets, so it was kind of sickeningly sweet and very grassy (what is that? the spirulina?)
I've enjoyed wheatgrass in the past, but that was 1 oz at a time, which was a million times easier than this. Oh, and speaking of ounces... let's get real. You add 10 oz of water, yes, but that's to 1/3 cup of powder (that's another 2.5 oz) and a banana and apple (easily another 8 oz), so you'd better use a LARGE glass and have a LARGE appetite, because 20 oz of room temperature sicky sweet grass froth is a lot to take in.
So I guess the goal is to drink 4 oz per minute... Who drinks that fast? (besides my neighbor on a Friday night.) I've got to get my sip and chew speed up (and yes, I admit I gagged and felt green for the first 30 minutes. and not 'green' in a good way.)
And then it says to drink 16 oz of water an hour afterward... so, of course you're not hungry! You can't possibly feel hunger with 36 oz of plant sludge sloshing around in your belly. Bloated and nauseous, yes; hungry, no.
All that said, I'm hard-core... I bought the giant-sized can. I will force myself to try try try again. But to be honest, right now I'm thinking: eat the apple as a snack, eat the banana as a snack, and do what that other reviewer said: add the powder to some soup and call it lunch.
So now the question is: can I stomach sweet grassy frothy soup? As I work on this morning's drink while I type this, another chewed sip suggests not.
It's 10:01am. Customer Rating: Summary: Results will vary. Didn't work for me. Comment: Before I launch into my experience, there's some misleading items on the packaging that need to be pointed out. First, while the product says "no soy protein" that does not mean there isn't soy in it. Some nutrients in it are soy derived. If you are allergic or avoiding soy for estrogenic reasons, this product may not be for you (although company claims that the processing eliminates allergic effects). Also, the can says "call for free scoop." Don't bother, they won't pack or post it correctly, leaving you with a useless broken scoop and 93 cents postage due. After I complained, they sent me a 1/3 cup scoop from the owner's kitchen, but it at that point, it was a little silly. Also, as you can gather from other reviews and my experience, you may not find that this product is either filling or that it tastes great, but it's obviously subjective.
I had hoped this would be a true meal replacement for me two meals a day, 5 meals a week. But after trying that, I plan it have it only occasionally. First, unless you do things like drink wheatgrass juice for health, it won't taste great. You can mask it fairly well, but it will still be gritty. I got used to it, but never truly liked it. I found that it really didn't fill me up for the 3-6 hours claimed. Initially, it didn't fill at all. After using it regularly, I got up to about 3 hours of feeling full, and needed solid food at that point. I think the fruit option spiked and crashed my blood sugar, but the soy/almond milk options just didn't provide enough fiber to be filling. Either way, didn't work. Although, I will say that when I had two a day, I ate much less dinner, so there was an overall satiating effect which was nice.
Initially, I felt a great increase in energy and felt really good on it. But then, after about 6 weeks, I developed what I semi-jokingly called afternoon narcolepsy. After my second daily shake, I would become profoundly exhausted and couldn't function at all until I had a short nap. And overall, I felt tired a lot. Working during the day made this very problematic. I didn't even think to blame the shake until I stopped it to try a hormonal health diet and found that the narcolepsy and fatigue immediately went away. I wonder if there might be excessive amounts of something in it like the selenium that can be toxic in too of high of doses. We get plenty in our food, but the just supplemental selenium in two of these shakes will have you half way to a toxic amount (and there's probably even more naturally occurring in the other shake ingredients). However, I really haven't researched it thoroughly enough to say for sure.
I think the company has great intentions and some great ideas. I hope they will continue researching evolving the product. And I may try it again, but it just wasn't that great for me in its current form and I have concerns about its safety.
