A Little Lightning. Despite parental advice, here's a good reason to sit in in a dark room and think small.
This Plasma Storm isn't as large as a standard plasma ball, so not only is it much more affordable -- the effect is concentrated and startling. The black plastic base has a switch.
Turn it on at which point the 3" dia plastic globe (think baseball size) is filled with blue stems that flare to pink, looking like dozens of electric flowers searching for a way out. Very cool.
Comes with a 6-ft power cord with transformer.

The red or blue (our choice) transparent-plastic base has a 3-way switch. It goes from "off" to "sound-activated" to constant "on," at which point the 3" dia plastic globe (think baseball size) is filled with blue stems that flare to pink, looking like dozens of electric flowers searching for a way out. Very cool. Comes with a 6-ft power cord with transformer.

Comment: Probably the BEST desk toy you can get. Runs on 4 AA's or 6v adaptor. I suggest you get the adaptor. When the batteries run low, it will just glow purple and blue. Cool effect, but not as much fun.
I had a full size one since about 1986 but put it away a long time ago for space. This little one is perfect for any place. Looks sharp and is a great conversation starter.
As long as kids understand it is made of glass, and are old enough to handle it, it can occupy them for hours.
Great for scale models, special effects, parties, etc. The current is low enough to make it very safe for most people. If you ever wanted one, just get it. It is great fun.
