Editorial Reviews:

V Magazine was launched in September 1999 as the younger sibling publication to the limited-edition quarterly Visionaire V is large format and visually driven, international in scope and collaborative in spirit—a place where "high art converses with underground culture." It is about fashion and all the things that go with it, such as art, music, film, and architecture.

Summary: Ms. Jackson cover
Comment: Just picked up the Spring '07 Issue with the most lovely Ms. Jackson on the cover and I can't help but love the magazine for no other reason then the cover and Her inside photo and article.
If you're a Janet Jackson fan you'll probably like this issue.
I am and I do.

Summary: Urban Fashionista parade...if that image disgusts you, this is not for you.
Comment: V magazine probably knows that it shouldn't take too much effort to entertain the likes of their roughly 20-something superficial hipster demographic as long as the visuals seem stylish and modern, but they put in the extra effort anyway.

Admittedly, I have only semi-read ONE issue, so I cannot give the full run-down of how the magazine usually is. However, with no other reviews on here, my first impression proves V is worth a glimpse.

V's chock full of style, style, style--and it's not just the content, comprised of enormous, glossy photos of urban-elite chic, muddled with messy, irreverent rock-inspired style, but the format itself screams "pretentious indie scenester/urban style guru" with its huge coffee table-sized pages and well-designed layout. The design reminded me of an exaggerated version of W, to the point that I thought perhaps they were born of the same publisher. But they are not, and I don't even read W, so I don't want to paint any false comparisons here.

So it's not very substantive, but does it have to be? I read their article on various college campus humor publications (e.g, the Harvard Lampoon), made up of brief interviews with the staff of each. Interesting...not your typical magazine piece. And not too in-depth. Just something to gloss over for fun.

Another article (that I didn't read) delved into the influence of a musical icon, and I'd imagine their other articles focus on the art/culture scene, other than its core fashion-focus. It definitely caters to the 20-something crowd that likes their fashion to look like their music and for their music to look good (I swear most of the underground musicians now meet moderate success because they are glamorous).

Again, I'm basing this impression on one issue, so perhaps the fashion isn't always urban/indie/rock tinged with elite glamour. Maybe it's normally more high-brow haute couture. (Can couture be high-brow? I have to start reading books again). Either way, the magazine has stylish photo spreads. The cover of the issue I grabbed featured Kate Moss with a beard. Gotta love it.
