The cajon was developed by African slaves. Often the slaves were forbidden to have drums, as slaveowners feared they would use them for communication in planning rebellions. This necessitated hidden drums. The original cajons were codfish boxes that could be kept in the home disguised as boxes for storage or use as furniture. After the restrictions of slavery were gone, the cajon had become so established that it continued to be used and further refined. For this instrument, the main playing surface is made of 4/5"-thick (4mm) Asian ash for warm bass tones and sharp slaps. Tension screws allow you to adjust the face for varied slap sounds. Main body is made of Siam oak which creates a strong shell with good projection. The strong rubber feet keep drum off the floor for freer shell resonance and also serve to keep the drum from sliding when you play.

Customer Rating: Summary: Good for a beginner Comment: I received my Cajon about a couple weeks ago. I ordered it through Musician's Friend website because they offer free shipping (the drum itself was the same price as amazon). I bought it to learn on. So far it has held up well. It is the perfect price and quality for someone who isn't too serious or care too much about professional sounds. I'm sure there are better made ones out there, but this would be perfect for just a casual acoustic setting. It is also able to be tuned.
