Customer Rating: Summary: Not reliable Comment: Usually we'd like to take the measurement a few time to make sure we get the correct reading. However, it gives dramatic different reading for each try no matter in rectal or under arm mode. Customer Rating: Summary: Reads too swiftly Comment: The thermometer is supposed to take seven seconds to read, however the one I received would only read for about 3-4 seconds. This caused bad temp readings, which never even got up to normal body temperature. I was very disappointed, as other reviews were quite positive. Hopefully this one was an anomoly. I returned to Amazon for a refund. Customer Rating: Summary: Fast & Accurate When You Need It Comment: When our old digital thermometer started acting up my wife and I starting looking on the Internet for a quality, fast reading digital thermometer. Having three children in our home, and since it is currently cold and flu season, we wanted something that could read a child's temperature in 30 seconds or less. Our old digital model took 60 seconds or more to produce a reading and we wanted something faster. After reading a few positive reviews for the Safety 1st Swift Read 3 in 1 Thermometer (model #49528), we decided to give it a try. At less than $20 we figured we could afford to take a chance.
After receiving the new thermometer I quickly glanced through the instructions. They are very straight forward and easy to understand. In less than 5 minutes we were testing the new device. Although this Safety 1st model comes with 10 free disposable thermometer covers, we threw ours away because we do not intend to use this digital thermometer for taking temperatures rectally. The disposable covers are NOT to be used for oral temperature readings and the manual warns against trying to do so. The instructions state that you can swab the business end of the thermometer with alcohol to properly clean and sterilize the unit between uses. We swab ours with alcohol before and after each use, to prevent the spread of germs.
This model has three different settings for how you wish to take your reading; oral (in mouth), rectal (ouch!), and underarm. There is a mode button that you push to switch between these methods. The selected mode is shown on the little LCD, with a picture of a person and an arrow pointing to the location. Very straight forward. To use the thermometer you simply press and release the on/off button. One beep will occur during which every portion of the LCD will light up, followed by the previous temperature measurement that was taken with the thermometer (only displays for about 2 or 3 seconds). The device then beeps twice, which lets you know that it is ready to take a new reading. It is at this point that you would press the mode button if you wish to change the body location you intend to take the temperature from. We just leave ours set to oral. You insert the thermometer into your mouth and under the tongue, being sure to try and place it in one of the two hot spots (along the inside of the jaw, to either side of the base of the tongue). You then close your mouth, being sure not to bite down on the probe. In roughly 5 to 7 seconds your temperature will be read and locked in. A successful temperature measurement will be indicated by either a single long beep, if your temperature is within the normal range, or 5 short beeps, if your temperature indicates a fever (called "Fever Alert Tone" in manual). You can then check the easy to read LCD display to see the recorded temperature. If the unit indicates a fever the LCD display will repeatedly flash the temperature reading on and off. You can then press the power button to shut the unit off and clean the tip with alcohol. After the tip is dry you should slip the included protective shroud (clear plastic) over the end of the digital thermometer to store away until your next use.
As you can clearly see, this digital thermometer is quick and nearly effortless to use. My wife and I tested the new digital thermometer against our older digital model, as well as our Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer. The new Safety 1st Swift Read 3 in 1 thermometer seems to be very accurate. I took several readings on myself, my wife and our children, to test for consistency, and the device showed very consistent readings between tests with each person (within a 10th of a degree). This impressed me a great deal, given how quickly this device detects your body temperature.
My wife and I are extremely happy with our new Safety 1st Swift Read 3 in 1 digital thermometer. It is fast, accurate and easy to use. For under $20 you would be hard pressed to find a better digital thermometer on the market today. My only complaint would be that the LCD display has no backlighting option, so you would need to be in a well lit area to read the display. I also wish the probe end was slightly flexible, as I feel this would make it somewhat safer and easier for young children to use. I cannot really comment on the included disposable covers because we never tried them, and do not have the need to do so in the future. I am amazed at how technology has progressed with digital thermometers, and this model is definitely a godsend for our home. We highly recommend it to any family in the market for a new digital thermometer. Customer Rating: Summary: Fairly reliable Comment: I selected the Safety First brand after reviewing a few others including ear thermometers. It works really well, reads quickly and is a good balance of cost and function. I have only had to use mine once and it was a false alarm; baby temperature was normal thank goodness. The 3-in-1 functionality is a plus for oral, rectal and underarm; but please not in the ears. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the the first unit did not work but Amazon was really good and sent a replacement immediately while i returned the faulty one. This is a satisfactory purchase.
