There are prodigies and there is progeny. Anoushka Shankar is both. As the daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, she's got bloodlines and a teacher who is one of the greatest to ever play sitar. While Anoushka has pretty good classical chops (not the best, but pretty good), Rise shows her versatility and growth as a composer, arranger, and producer. The nine-song album features her sitar along with a variety of traditional Indian and modern Western instruments. She orders the ragas logically, starting with morning and working toward the final one at the end of the night, each one capturing the mood of its particular time of day. For example, mellow opener "Prayer in Passing" would be the initial waking moments, while the mood soon gets more upbeat on "Red Sun" before the midday heat sets in for the middle tracks and brings down the tempo. Traditionalists will call it pop, but there is nothing light or disposable about Rise. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Rating: Summary: Soothing Instrumentals Comment: Amazing talent! Soothing instrumental music that makes perfect background music after a stressful day...I was a little surprised that only one or two tracks have accompaning vocals...Amazing buy overall!
Customer Rating: Summary: Melody at its best Comment: First of all, I must say, I dont listen to Classical music like this one, but out of blue I came accross this one in Amazon and now I am in total love with it. Each and every song is very well crafted and well composed. Very deep and very relaxing. This is the very first time I have heard Anoushka Shankar, I have heard her name for a very very long time, but never thought such music would impress me, but man I was wrong. This is one of my favorite albums of all time now. No exaggeration! Trust me, this is $9 well spent.
If you like relaxing, soothing , peaceful music without much noise, look no far. This is it.
Almost all the songs are awesome. Some were slow for me, but again this is the first time I was listening to such music. Others might like it. I really loved the Beloved song.
Bottom line is MUST BUY!
Customer Rating: Summary: Gorgeous CD, what a talent! Comment: The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, Anoushka Shankar is quite a talent like her father, whose CDs I've collected for years. I first heard Ms. Shankar on Tantra Lounge, Vol. 3, "Rebirth," a collaboration with Midival Punditz (I subsequently purchased their CD as well). It's one of those songs I could listen to all day long. This CD does not have a song I connected with like Rebirth on it, but the entire mood of the CD is wonderful, and one I like to play when I get home from work. Relaxing, lifting. Highly recommend.

I am a devotee of Ravi Shankar and now Anoushka Shankar has stolen my heart. Just in the nick of time as the master enters his golden sunset. I recently saw her performing with the master in Washington DC (he was phenomenal and vibrant at 87) and courageously she has mastered the art of classical Indian music. In this, her first solo production, she has found the soul of Shankar! The master will live on in the 21st Century, as Madame Maestro, creating the classics for the next thousand years!
Customer Rating: Summary: Sitar please Comment: I loved the blend of Indian and western music. Anoushka is an amazing sitar master and certainly brings the inherited talent of her father plus her own interpertaion to this music. Great CD with ragas done on a slightly more western style.
