This efficient Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic humidifiier uses several cutting edge technologies to achieve an optimum quality of environmental control. High-frequency vibrations generate a micro-fine mist, while an Intelligent Temperature Compensation system (ICS) measures humidity relative to the room temperature and automatically adjusts the output to achieve an optimum balance dynamically as conditions change. The water is kept clean with three separate processes that make up the Microbial Protection System: ultrasonic technology, pre-heating, and Ionic Silver Stick. The latter makes use of the proven anti-microbial qualities of Silver, which has proven effective against more than 650 types of bacteria without any chemical additives. When operated with the pre-heating function, the water is heated to 176°F before it enters the nebulizer chamber. The mist exits the appliance at a comfortable temperature of 104°F. This neutralizes the cooling effect of mist to keep the room temperature from falling, and also keeps the water cleaner. A replaceable demineralization cartridge ensures a hygienic, pure water mist, without lime scale or mineral residues. Summary: a good ultrasonic
Comment: First off, this unit does not have a 3.5 gallon capacity. Its really
just shy of a 2 gallon capacity (perhaps 2 full gallons if you removed
the filter cartridge that sticks into the water tank).
This unit puts out a good volume of mist at a high rate and does it
quietly. It's about twice as fast as my other (older) unit and
quieter to boot. The nozzle can spray in two directions, which
I find helps distribute the mist into the air better.
I don't use this with hard water -- if you plan on using hard water
I just wouldn't use an ultrasonic humidifier, get one of the wicking
humidifiers.
The water reservoir has a sturdy handle that is nice for carrying
when its full. However, a couple negatives for me are that the
tapering of the reservoir make it look unstable when you're filling
it (haven't had it fall over though). Also, I keep this up on a
dresser, and its hard to put the full reservoir (which is heavy)
back onto the unit. That would be less of an issue if kept on a
table or floor.
Overall, I'm happy with this unit and its been running almost
continuously this winter.

Comment: At first I thought this humidifier was pretty cool (due to the features), but then after a few months of use, it started making a rattling noise which eventually would go away. After about 1 year of use, the rattling noise is constant. Personally, I'd rather have one of those consistently loud hot air humidifiers than one that rattles as bad as this thing does!
Its also a pain having to put this thing up about 3 ft in the air above the floor and when you refill the water you are almost guaranteed to spill the water a little at least.

Summary: Would be great if it didn't sound like a cow!
Comment: First of all, I must validate my argument by stating that I own an Air-O-Swiss 7135 as well. That unit has been flawless. It is quiet, humidifies well, and has been hassle free. I recently moved my 7135 to my daughter's room and decided to give the "upgraded" 7142 a try in my own room. The thing sounds horrible! It sounds like a low pitched cow mooing on and off every few seconds. The sound is very disturbing. Not even my dog would sleep in the room with the horrendous cow sound. It just droned on and off all night long and kept me awake. I tried shaking it and kicking it, but it didn't get rid of the horrendous bovine that is now living in my room. I think I'm going to just throw it out my window so I can put it out of its misery.

Summary: Great product
Comment: I purchased this humidifier about a month ago. It works fine, with just a little white dust. My apartment is about 1000 sq, feet, so I found that I needed two in order to maintain the humidity level I wanted.
It's very quiet too. One thing I noticed is that the humidity reading on the machine is not accurate most of the time. It's off about ten points, so you might want to invest in a separate instrument to measure your humidity level.

Comment: Read the all the reviews for this piece of junk and do not buy. Poor customer service and they do not honor warranty. I would suggest everyone who has bought this to file a complaint with Better Business Bureau. I have had unit for only two months and the tank is cracking all over. It also leaks out of base onto floor. At first I thought it was nice but did not last for more than a few weeks before it had problems. This is a $200 unit. My $30 unit I got at grocery store locally works fine and has worked all winter. Do not buy any of their products. That is the only power we have against these lousy companies. I wish I had read the Amazon reviews first.
