Editorial Reviews:

Twenty years' worth of country superstar Reba McEntire's engaging music videos are included on Reba: Video Gold 1. The first thing that stands out is their consistent production quality. There isn't a single video from, say, the 1980s--an era that left a lot of artists with embarrassing promotional artifacts--in this collection, beginning with the 1986 "Whoever’s In New England," which casts McEntire as a stay-at-home wife whose busy husband may be cheating on her during business trips. "Sunday Kind of Love" takes a very different approach, setting its pop ballad in a World War II ballroom while, elsewhere, a wounded husband returns home from the war. Another unexpected setting accompanies McEntire’s cover of Don Everly’s "Cathy’s Clown," in which the song’s hard questions about a jilted man are transferred to the Wild West. "Fancy" is the biggest cliché in this anthology, in which Reba plays a big star returning to her rustic roots, while "Is There Life Out There" finds her portraying a beleaguered waitress trying to go to school and be a devoted wife and mother all at once. (Huey Lewis plays her spouse.)

"Does He Love You," a duet with Linda Davis, is a fairly tortured story of a man in love with both of the women singing the song. It feels silly, but the whole thing is ultimately played for a laugh. (Rob Reiner, of all people, makes a little cameo appearance.) "Why Haven't I Heard from You" is the most fun video here, a sassy musical set in a Grecian beauty parlor; McEntire’s appealing but comically rubber face proves a lot of fun. "If You See Him/If You See Her," a duet with Brooks and Dunn, is a very satisfying performance with a little story that finds Kix Brooks playing a mutual friend to both ex-lovers Ronnie Dunn and McEntire. Things take a sentimental turn toward the end with McEntire’s cover of Kenny Rogers' "Sweet Music Man," as well as "What Do You Say" (a maudlin story of a mom dying of cancer) and "He Gets That from Me" (the story of a mother and son getting by after the death of the family patriarch). --Tom Keogh

Comment: Very good, videos are alright but I like to see artists performing live. I would especially like to see a DVD of Reba performing live at a concert.

Comment: I waited a long time as a huge Reba fan for a DVD compilation of her music videos. Her music videos have long been my favorite part of her music. She makes the best videos around and they only get better over time.

If you are a Reba fan, every day or passing, or know one you are shopping for, this and her other video DVD, Video Gold II, will not disappoint. The price is great for such a wonderful enjoyable experience.

If you are a fan of Reba's acting, might I suggest you check out the "Reba" show DVDs? What great gifts for all of us Reba lovers!

Comment: Video Gold I and II have it all, from mournful ballads to upbeat motivational songs. I am just so impressed by the depth and range of this woman's artistry. She's just a joy to watch, and I've loved seeing how her music and videos have evolved over the years (it is tremendously fun to try and date each video based on Reba's hair and clothing). Also included are some wonderful live concert videos.

Reba McEntire has been famous over half my life, and I foolishly dismissed her decades ago when I was in high school and so not interested in country music (I was into U2, REM, the Police, 10,000 Maniacs - remember them?). But now I have endless respect for her talent and creativity, for all of her projects over the last few years (Reba TV show, South Pacific concert, her CDs, etc...), for her boundless energy, and for the way she just keeps getting better and better. I am looking forward to whatever her next project is.

I pretty much consider the purchase of these DVDs a no-brainer. Yes you can watch them on YouTube, but the quality is much better on the DVDs and my television screen is still much larger and more satisfying than my computer monitor. Plus each DVD contains 18 videos, which is a great value.

So whether you are a new fan like me, or a long time die-hard fan, you are bound to enjoy these DVDs tremendously.
