Spotlight customer reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: Don't buy Comment: Magellan Customer service is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. They offer a free 30 day map update since all of their products ship with out of date maps. This would be a good thing except it is in the fine print of their products and their customer support email address that their website list is the wrong address. I had to get through to their customer service by posting a bad review on their website. By the time they responded my unit was beyond the 30 day limit and they refused to give me the update. This is a bad business practice. Garmin has a 60 day guarantee which is posted directly on their website in plain view. Customer Rating: Summary: Don't listen to the other two reviews. Comment: Okay, at the time i'm writing this, there are two reviews that are showing this is a horrid product etc etc etc.
Yes, this item is refurbished - For me, it worked right out of the box no problem.
Yes, this item could use the 80 something dollar update; does it need it? I don't think so.
I purchased this item as a gift in July/August. Its now November. This device has been used for three trips out of state and about 40 different trips around the state.
The first time it was used, it was used to go to a slightly far area that everyone knew the direction to (To test it out) it worked fine.
The input (Finding the address) can be a little tricky. For instance; to go to one of the family members houses.. Instead of Aurora as the city, it was a different (older) version of the city name. This was easily worked around because you can search by zip code and it will bring up the cities you *May* be looking for.
If you know the address your going to, you can always get there and save it as a destination (Some GPS systems ONLY work this way).
The system is nice. The size is convenient; the screen is rather large you can zoom in and out and you can customize the map.
If you make a wrong turn, it will calculate a new route for you (No need to back track).
The system is a little low to hear. I'm sure its fine in a semi quiet car without music (or very low music) but for my parents it was a little low to hear.
It can easily be charged in the car (Even as your tripping out to your destination) your computer, or on a wall socket.
It holds a pretty good charge, i haven't exactly timed the charge but i do know it was taken from Cleveland Ohio to Aurora Ohio (left on over night) taken back, Left on again over night, then taken from Cleveland Ohio to Michigan without a charge.
Anyways, i will give this GPS 4 stars. I think its a great, handy little system. Definitely worth the 88 i paid for it. Its missing a star because it could stand to be a little louder, and the maps could be updated a bit.
However, this is a great little gadget, and i will be purchasing one for myself shortly. Customer Rating: Summary: Magellan - a bomb - don't buy refurbished Comment: I purchased a reburbished Magellan Roadmate 2000 GPS system at a great price. The only problem was it didn't work from the beginning. I will be so much more leery about purchasing a refurbished product after this experience. Amazon was great about paying for the return postage and made it easy as there were no questions asked.
I ended up purchasing a brand new Garmin on Amazon later and love it. The key is new!
Customer Rating: Summary: Avoid Magellan products Comment: When I first purchased this magellan one of the first things I noticed was MANY missing address's. By this I mean I would try to enter an address and according the the Roadmate it didn't exist. And they SHOULD have been there, because these were not new addresses. They had been around for decades. SO I was forced to purchase the "upgrade" to get the "latest" maps. This turned into a nightmare. While attempting to purchase the upgrade from Magellans site, I was repeatedly kicked out of the purchase page. When all was done I find that I had purchased TWO upgrades. I called "customer support" where I am assured one of the orders IS canceled and that I wouldn't be charged for it. Not only did they charge me for it but sent the second order anyway. To make a long story short I have mailed the second order back and talked to Magellans customer support (which must be in another country) 10 times and I still haven't been given my money back. My advice to any GPS shoppers: AVOID THIS COMPANY LIKE IT WERE THE BLACK PLAGUE. If you have to deal with their customer support, as Mr. T would say "I pity the fool".
