Editorial Reviews:

The Pirate Queen, with a score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), took a critical beating when it opened on Broadway, but as this catchy cast recording demonstrates, that reception was really unnecessarily harsh. Set in the 17th century, the show (which closed after only 85 performances) tells the story of Grace O’Malley (Stephanie J. Block), an Irish ship captain and pirate who defied Queen Elizabeth I (Linda Balgord). The combination of that setting with the fact that the producers also brought us Riverdance means an overall Celtic flavor. But fans of Boublil and Schönberg should not fear. The duo delivers plenty of the over-the-top, super-emotional power ballads they’re famous for--it’s hard not to wonder what Celine Dion would make of songs such as "Woman" or "I’ll Be There" (the latter sung by a man, but no matter!). Special kudos to Balgord, whose deliciously campy stage portrayal of Elizabeth I comes across well on "The Waking of the Queen," "The Role of the Queen," and two harpsichord-driven, vibrato-laden duets with Block, "She Who Has All" and "Woman to Woman." Also of note to fans of traditional singing is the participation of Áine Uí Cheallaigh (known from Riverdance) on several tracks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Summary: Vastly underappreciated!
Comment: I am a great fan of the musical, and a shoe-licker of Granuaile, but am not so blind as to instantly dismiss the flaws.
The flaws, however, are all that the critics seem to see. My thoughts on the CD were that it was an amazing /workshop/. If the songs had been developed a bit more; the lyrics twiddled, etc, this could have been one of the most amazing musicals to hit Broadway.
But even as a workshop...oh, the songs! Who cares if The Pirate Queen sounds precisely like Do You Hear The People Sing? The musical is sung by an amazing, devoted cast that puts everything they have into the songs, which have great power as they are.
It's sad, really, that such an amazing show, about an even more amazing woman, should have been sunk before it even had a chance to finish its maiden voyage. The seas are rough, but the captain is talented and the ship would have eventually reached its destination triumphantly and in in beautiful shape.

Summary: THE PIRATE QUEEN - BROADWAY CAST - CD
Comment: Purchased this CD for my 14 year old daughter who had recently acted as Grace O'Malley in a local production of the Pirate Queen. She had googled the broadway show and loved what she saw. The CD was even more fantastic than she had hoped. Definitely her most played and listened CD.

Summary: Amazing Music!
Comment: I bought this at the recommendation of a friend, and because I loved Les Mis. I wasn't expecting much, due to the reviews I had read previously, but I was really blown away. The melodies are simpler that Les Mis, but that is part of their charm and beauty. Stephanie J Block does a fantastic job as Grace, and the rest of the cast is really wonderful too. If you like celtic music or some of the quieter, softer Les Mis songs; A heart full of love, Bring him home... There is a very good chance you will fall in love with the music of The Pirate Queen as well.

Summary: SOME AWESOME MUSIC
Comment: I had some unreasonable aprehensions about this musical and had postponed its purchase for several months. Finally, I got the album and simply LOVED IT! Most of the songs are really beautiful and the sound quality of the CD is matchless. Little can we say about the story which seems somehow old-fashioned; yet, keeping the comments in terms of this CD only, it seems to me that it's quite a successful work. In a simple way, it is MISS SAIGON/LES MISERABLES going celt.

Summary: Good CD
Comment: This was certainly not a hit show and with good reason. Still, so-so Boubil and Schonberg is often better than many others best works, and I enjoyed the music on this well produced CD.
