Offering a slim, lightweight clamshell design, the Samsung A437 is a great choice for users looking for an easy-to-use and affordable cell phone that's outfitted with some very helpful extras. Weighing just 2.9 ounces, the svelte A437 measures 0.63 inches thick and is easily pocketable. It includes a number of handy features that will enhance your mobile lifestyle, including Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free headsets, an integrated VGA-quality still camera, and an external display that shows who's calling as well as the current time. This quad-band phone communicates over GSM/GPRS networks and offers global voice and data roaming in over 125 countries. This model comes in gold, and it's also available in slate gray and gold.

This lightweight clamshell phone includes an external display, VGA still camera, and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.
The phone sports an interior 2-inch color LCD that has a 128 x 160-pixel resolution and 65,000 colors. The external monochrome display measures 1 inch, has a 96 x 96-pixel resolution, and offers 4 levels of gray. The internal phone book can hold up to 1000 entries (in addition to 250 numbers saved to the SIM card)--with up to 5 numerical entries plus email address per contact--and it supports up to 40 digits and 16 characters. Other dialing features include 8 one-touch numbers for easy access to your most frequent contacts and the last 30 incoming/outgoing/missed calls. In addition to voice calls, text messaging, and MMS capability, you can also connect via Instant Messaging (IM) services such as Windows Live, Yahoo!, and AOL.

Because the A437 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total hands-free operation; it also includes a headset jack for wired earpieces. Browse the internet with MEdia Net browser (WAP) quickly with one button access. The VGA camera captures still images up to 640 x 480 pixels, and it includes a 2x digital zoom and a three-option self-timer. Other features include:

  • Built-in Java support enables you to download mobile applications, wallpapers and ringtones
  • Personal Organizer (Calendar, Calculator, Scheduler, Memo, Task, Currency Converter, Tip Calculator)
  • Video clip playback (MMS messages)
  • My Business Card (contact cards that can be attached to MMS messages)
  • Speakerphone, voice recorder
  • Multi-lingual text display (English, French, Spanish)
  • Wireless modem capability
  • Stopwatch (4-lap stopwatch)
  • Countdown timer (99 Hours, 59 Minutes)
  • Unique ringers (match a finger to a caller in the phonebook)
  • Predictive text entry using T9 technology
  • Three-way calling; conference call (1 + 5)
  • Illuminated backlit keypad

The A437 operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"), with availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. This third-generation, high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.

Summary: do not listen to these morons
Comment: dont listen to everyone saying that this phone will break, because it wont unless you are electronically retarded and do not know how to handle a freaking cell phone. Anyway the phone gets great reception and is extremely easy to use with a huge display. Also it is physicaly well made and most likely will not break. So dont listen to these retarded people who think they know what quality is because I assure you they dont.

Summary: Can I get a refund for the problems related to this device?
Comment: I admit I was taken by the sleek design, the placement of the buttons and the keys. I like the metallic red finish, and I enjoy the picture quality. I like some of the features, but I have major problems with how the phone operates.

Many of my calls seem to drop. I thought this was relative to where I live, however, I didn't have any problems with other phones I've used in this residence.

The reception is awful. many times I'll hear static, the caller will cut out, or I'll get crickets.

While I like the size of the phone, it's a little too small for my tastes. I get hand cramps from using this a lot. I bought a case which adds some substance to the device and has been helpful, but it's not good enough.

One of my biggest complaints is the placement of the antenna. I have to be very aware of where I place my hand in relation to the phone or I get a lot of static, a dropped call, or the silent treatment. I have found it frustrating that I can't put my feet up and chat. The antenna is so bad that I have found that I need to find a specific place to stand in my home, hold the phone in a certain way to make sure I get reception.

I don't have any problem with Samsung: I love their HD TVs and other products they make. I sense that this phone is a turkey. I've had a RAZR, iphone and a few other Motorola products and didn't have any of the same problems I've had with this device.

Summary: Nearly Free but Worth Even Less
Comment: Buy a better one from the start! You'll need a new one in two months anyway. That is, if you're an active person who carries her/his phone in your pocket. The thing is so moisture sensitive that the front screen will go fritz if you walk a mile on a warm day, and it has a little Judas of a humidity detector inside it which will negate your warranty. But even if you carry it in a purse, you'll find that the photo button on the outer edge, right beside the red "back" button, is stupidly easy to touch by accident.
The only "good" thing about this phone is as follows: I didn't want a cell phone. I like being out of touch. My wife and son both scoffed at me for being such a Luddite, but I held fast for several years. Then they stalked into my studio and shot me with a tranquilizer dart and thrust the cursed thing into my cold, stiff hand... well, not quite, but they "gave" me this Samsung on no uncertain terms. Now I can tell them that it's broken, and have at least a week or so of autonomy before they buy me another.

Summary: Don't buy this phone
Comment: I had this phone for three days when the face of the mini display cracked under normal use causing the whole phone to stop working.

Summary: Great phone. Cool design.
Comment: This is the second phone i've had. It was great; i liked everything about it. I don't see why people are rating it so poorly. The camera button is a little sensitive, but if you accidentaly press it, then just exit out of the camera. Not a big deal. I owned it for about 5 months, and one of my friends stepped on it accidentaly. The outer screen cracked, so i'll just get a new one. It worked just fine.
