Editorial Reviews:

A feature-length film about a struggling, Internet-addicted filmmaker and cinephile, with big-screen dreams, who relieves his frustrations by frequenting a website run by a webcam mistress, whom he eventually meets and develops a relationship with. The man, now having to face the challenges of having a relationship in front of the all-seeing eye of the World Wide Web, soon begins to question the decisions he has made, sparking even greater personal confusion, and leading toward an inevitably somber conclusion. The comedy is divided into 2 chapters that combine a variety of disparate storytelling techniques - ranging from the experimentation of the French New Wave in the first chapter, to the more conventional narrative structure of the second chapter. In Part I: The Man Who Couldnt, the unnamed protagonist and his cinephiliac, internet addicted world are introduced along with his eclectic friends. We see him at work (though not actually working); we see how he spends his solitary hours. His theories about love and art and free will vs. destiny are explained; and he also tackles the really big questions: What are the top ten gags that are always funny in the movie? And what ten films are responsible for the sorry state of Hollywood? In Part II: Summer with Monikacam, our hero meets the girl of his wildest dreams, the lady he thought he would not meet until he had 3 feature films under his belt and a villa in Spain. But here she is. The only problem is. She is Monika, the girl hes been pleasuring himself to on his computer screen for about a year. The two fall in love quickly and deeply, but can he bare the thought of all his friends and colleagues having access to his intimate moments on a regular basis? Is our man ready to give up privacy for a love that exists only in the movies?

Summary: just what the doctor ordered
Comment: The Man Who Couldn't is a welcome change from your run of the mill "urban" independent films. The characters are intellectual, bohemian, and diverse. If you are a true lover of cinema, a pessimistic romantic, or just looking for a truly alternative voice in the increasingly homogeneous indy scene, then this is the movie for you.
