NINE INCH NAILS: Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D

YEAR ZERO ALBUM REMIXED: STEPHEN MORRIS, BILL LASWELL, KRONOS QUARTET, SAUL WILLIAMS, OLOF DREIJER, THE FAINT AND MORE

REMIX IT YOURSELF: EVERY MASTER MULTI-TRACK MADE AVAILABLE

"I'm very pleased with the way it turned out," says Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails' Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D (Interscope Records). "Remix records can be disposable garbage (of which I myself have been guilty to some extent) but this collection feels good to me."

Spun off from Year Zero, the #2-charting album issued in the spring, Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D features a stunning diversity of remixers, from Joy Division and New Order's Stephen Morris to classical crossover pioneer Kronos Quartet and hip-hop poet Saul Williams; from avant-garde leader Bill Laswell, electronica's Olof Dreijer from The Knife, Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino and post-punk revivalists The Faint to an unknown fan who submitted a remix via the Internet.

"I reached out to heroes, friends and strangers," says Reznor. "I encouraged those I approached to do anything and insert themselves as much as possible into the track. Some of the stuff that was done earlier led me to choosing other people to balance things out. The Pirate Robot Midget mix is a fan's work--I thought it was great, it filled a need and I asked permission to use it here. It's always interesting for me to hear my work reinterpreted--I hope it is for you as well."

In fact, purchasers can even reinterpret and remix Year Zero themselves. The CD package for Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D includes a DVD-ROM containing every track from Year Zero in multi-track format (Mac and PC). Perhaps for the first time, the master multi-tracks for every recording on a major album are being made available to the public. The tracks are pre-formatted for Apple GarageBand and Ableton Live (Mac or PC); the DVD-ROM also adds the demo version of Ableton Live (Mac or PC) and generic WAVE files at 16 bit 44K that can be loaded into any audio editor.

A special Web site, remix.nin.com, will debut upon Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D's release date. Says Reznor,"Remixes and fun encouraged."

Summary: Yes, its better than the original....
Comment: Sorry folks, have to report the truth. Particularly on tracks like "The Great Destroyer", which sound here like what the original should sound like. It just sounds deeper, more cohesive, and is a better album. I know people hate to hear it, but the remix album has surpassed the original here, sorry.

Summary: what?
Comment: This is (somehow I didn't believe it possible) the worst Nine Inch Nails remix album, yes, worse than Fixed. 2 songs worth listening to. Sigh.

Summary: Some real imaginative gems here
Comment: There are some real imaginative reinterpretations of Year Zero on this album. The opening track, originally an instrumental piece, is transformed into a socio-political battle cry by Saul Williams. The tracks that follow vary in their musicality. Several just become mindless and repetitive, stretching the length of the original song, and just looping a bland groove over and over again, never developing into anything. But there are a few stand-out gems to be found, and the included DVD is worth the price alone, containing all the individual tracks of the original album, for you to remix on your own, in you DAW of your choice.

Summary: renewed my faith in misanthropism
Comment: Preface: I have been a NIN fan since someone thought I'd appreciate an advance copy of "Pretty Hate Machine" WAAAAAAY back when. Also, unlike many I know, "Broken" is far and away my favorite album and "With Teeth" gets equal play as "Downward Spiral". I think that makes me a freak among freaks. I think all NIN albums are stellar compared to most of the junk out there. However, after I got sick from listening to "Fixed" way back when, I thought I'd skip the NIN secondary market altogether. I have kept true to that until now.
The truth be told, I wasn't going to purchase this disk either, in fact I was waiting for a surround sound version of "year zero" to come out (BTW "Downward Spiral" NEVER sounded as good as it does in 5.1 it is unnervingly good). But since it offered all the original songs in Garageband I figured there wasn't really a downside so I bought it.
I would like to highlight a song or two, but it just wouldn't be right. From start to finish, this album is amazing, I think Trent and Co. really outdid themselves. I honestly can't point to a weak track on there. After listening to Saul Williams on those tracks REALLY makes me want to check out NiggyTarDust a little more.

Summary: As a die-hard NIN fan...
Comment: This remix album is TERRIBLE. Do NOT get it. I've never been more disappointed with a Nine Inch Nails related purchase in my life. I love every single album to death, except this one. Year Zero is one of my favourite albums of Trent's actually, second to Pretty Hate Machine, and this remix album just totally butchers the beauty of the original Year Zero...
