Editorial Reviews:

Fritz, the program that for many years now has fascinated the chess world. It played against the legendary Garry Kasparov in New York and in 2006, beat world champion Vladimir Kramnik 4:2 in a big public match in Bonn, Germany. Millions of fans followed these great duels between man and machine and were delighted by the world class games that they produced. But dont be afraid - Fritz has a different side to its personality. The program will help you along during the game, with numerous sophisticated coaching functions, adjusting its playing strength to exactly match that of any opponent. It graphically displays threats and plans, and provides full opening statistics.

Customer Rating: Summary: Great For Analysing Your Own Games Comment: I don't play against it. It's pointless for 2 reasons:
1. It's much better than me.
2. I doubt whether it can create any useful plan I can learn from. Its strength lies mainly in exploiting the advantages it can get from my mistakes.
However, I do use it for analysing my tournament games, as I'm a beginner-intermediate level player, and I make many mistakes (at different levels), positional and (mainly) tactical, for which Fritz provides me with alternative variations.
Let me tell you that if you're seriously into improving your game, this is the tool to have. By using it to analyse your own games you are maximizing the amount of experience you gain from each game you play.
Look for articles in the internet for instructions on how to analyse your games with Fritz.
Customer Rating: Summary: For the Serious Chessplayer, this is it Comment: I used to have Fritz 9 which I enjoyed using for a my chess needs. Fritz 11 is definitely a vast improvement over version 9. Some of the little glitches I noticed in Fritz 9 are gone. As far as the analysis engine yes, it's much better. I bought Fritz 11 with the 2008 PowerBooks and the Nalimov endgame tablebases for a comprehensive chess tool.
The training functions are not for the faint of heart. But if you're serious about improving your play, for studying openings and finding the best move in your games you really cannot go wrong.
I am sure there are other chess engines which may be a few rating points more powerful than Fritz. Practically speaking, on my 3.2 Ghz / 2 Gb RAM PC I doubt I would truly see the difference. I bumped up the hashtable ram from 384 Mb (default) to 768 Mb. This program is definitely at the highest Grandmaster playing strength, quite enough for my needs.
Customer Rating: Summary: On the fritz Again Comment: Like I mentioned in my previous reviews you pay a whole lot of money for basically the same program brought out year after year. If you absolutely must have the highest rated Fritz and you can play in the top 1% of players go for it. But in my humble opinion it's just as good to buy the bargain basement $10 edition from last year. Nearly ALL the features are on this. Frustrating having a program that only brings out minor comestic changes and doesn't invest some of the money for new editions in major player friendly improvements
As noted in other comments it's fine having a 'bulletin board" layout back in the good old pioneering 1990's but having now available duo processing, high speed internet, anti-aliasing, You'd think they would bring some realistic chess boards or give some eye candy out . Even if they actually made improvements in the engine so that it plays more ' human' it'd be something.
Note that chessbase STILL only give you a years/6 months online play. Then you have to pay annual subscription fees . In this day and age when you pay $50 for any other game programs that server should be free. This isn't exactly a MORPG with weekly updates. Note, NO support or tech help available. Only callback is that you can email them !!
I have no issues with the smarts of the engine, but even since Fritz 6 it has been able to outplay 90% of the players. So when buying a new program it should give you a whole more.
I'm not too sure about this other reviewer on this page. I always get suspicious when this is their only post, praise the product too much , give it five stars and make idiotic propaganda statements. "Want to setup a special chess position, Fritz's interface makes it super easy. " Either the person works for the company or likes to give out unqualified unthoughtful support. It's fine to have a positive review, but make sure it's an actual informed opinion and not sounding like the sales rep.
Customer Rating: Summary: The best Comment: Fritz is the best chess program out there. Extremely, user-friendly this program plays a top notch game. Moreover, it contains excellent training features. It can be customized to give any level player a good game. Afterward, you can set Fritz on maximum strength and have it analyze the game. It will even create little puzzles for you to solve as it analyzes! This feature is particularly good for reviewing games you play with human opponents. Also has several nifty features which help you study openings. For example, when analyzing a game it can search its own grandmaster database or any other chess database and match your game up with similar games... instantly telling you what was played in the other game. So, not only can it give its own analysis, but at least in the opening, it can quickly give you an idea of what the very best players in the world play.
