Comment: This games is a pefect blend of realistic real-time strategy and innovative turn-based games. It is quite historically accurate especially when compared to other games based during this time period. It also allows players with a lot of replay value.

Summary: Turn based strategy-with real time battles
Comment: I have played total war since Shogun TW- I am a fan of turn based strategy all the way back to the best one, Chess. For those of you who do not know about this game, do not be fooled by the RTS label. This is 'not' a real time strategy in the true sense. Consider playing Risk/with infinite more detail to growing your power base. Taxes/Building/Training armies/ politics and Diplomacy, it's all there.
You might even learn a little bit of History as you go.
This gold edition is a deal. I purchased the first version and then the expansion and actually do not play the scenarios in the expansion as I prefer the Grand Campaign. For this I have found a couple of Mods that really expand on this title. You don't have to fight the real time battles if you don't want to-these can be time consuming so if you have overwhelming odds you can just auto resolve the battle.
all in all this title is well worth the asking price.

Summary: The Problem with Sequels
Comment: This game is a sequel of the earlier Medieval Total War, which was one of the greatest computer games ever known to man. Compiling this game, they tried to incorporate the best aspects of the previous series, Rome Total War, and ratchet it up a step. Unfortunately what passes for improvement has all the downfalls that are common among computer game sequels these days.
Computer game sequels are rarely as good as the originals in fun, but instead tend to be more mundane games with better graphics. And the graphics in Medieval 2 ARE fantastic! Unfortunately, this improvement in graphics comes with a requirement to upgrade your system. Don't bother trying to play without a graphics accelerator.
Once you get past the eye candy the game play is not as good as the original because the A.I. fails to keep pace with the other improvements in the game. For example, as in Rome Total War strategic movement is no longer area to area ala Risk, but now allows for more finesse in positioning your armies in strategic choke points. This "improvement" should make the game better, but the AI has not kept up with the finesse needed to take advantage of this improvement. Moving area to area requires a much simpler AI algorithm so the old Medieval Total War actually gave a more challenging game-play.
On the tactical level, Medieval 2 corrected the timid AI that allowed you you shower an enemy with arrows as it ran around in circles taking casualties. Now, if you have missile troop superiority you will find the AI quickly closing and charging your battle-lines. Of course the AI tends to quickly charge your battle-lines whether you have missile superiority or not- and it does exactly that - charge your battle-lines. Even if you have superior infantry, it charges you frontally, unlike Rome Total War where the AI at least tried to find an exposed flank to charge. The result is it's almost impossible to lose a battle against the AI fought on the tactical map unless you have overwhelming inferiority or by some fluke you are attacked by two armies from opposite directions. As big plus of the new system is that now you CAN be attacked by multiple armies from different directions simultaneously as opposed to the original Total War where combined armies would come at you in waives of 16 units.
Overall, it's still a good game, but given the still hefty price tag, coupled with the need to upgrade your system, I would strongly recommend buying the original Medieval Total War instead (with Viking Invasion expansion) if you don't already have it. If you already have the original and are dying for a new experience, this one will give you hours of addictive entertainment, but not the challenge that the first one did.

Summary: Will cause problems for your system
Comment: I run the ATI Radeon® X1600, 3.0 dual core Pent, 2.0 Gig ram, Windows XP. Took 4 restarts, and countless downloaded patches to finnaly be able to run the program. 5 minutes into the game, my system locked up and I ended up having to reinstall my graphics card.
I spent 2 days trying to play this game. It looks very sweet the few minutes I can get it to run. Have never been able to play more the 3 game days without locking up. After a very long restart, I am forces to perform maintance on my graphics in order to run any of my games.
I have researched other people posting similar problems. Save you computer, time, and sanity. Do not attempt to play this game.
