Stephen Collins is an ambitious politician. Cal McAffrey is a well-respected investigative journalist and Stephen's ex-campaign manager. En route to work one morning Stephen's research assistant mysteriously falls to her death on the London Underground. It's not long before revelations of their affair hit the headlines. Meanwhile a suspected teenage drug dealer is found shot dead. These (apparently unconnected) events expose a dangerous habit within modern government of dancing too closely with the corporate devil. Friendships are tested and lives are put on the line as an intricate web of lies unfolds.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre:Â TELEVISION/BBC UPC:Â 883929005932 Manufacturer No:Â 1000036405

Customer Rating: Summary: State of Play review Comment: State of Play was suspenseful to the end, It kepted you guessing.
most enjoyable.
Certainly worth the time to watch it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good politically-themed British whodunnit Comment: "State Of Play" (2003) This BBC-produced miniseries is a taut, intelligent political thriller with fine acting contributions, notably from the venerable Bill Nighy, who plays an arch, politically savvy newspaper editor. A series of seemingly random killings appear to be linked by ties to a multinational oil conglomerate... and our heroes have to discover the truth of what happened, lest more lives be lost. If you like thrillers that aren't packed with overly-recognizable A-list Hollywood types, then this one's for you! (Joe Sixpack, Slipcue film reviews)
Customer Rating: Summary: Forensic Buff Comment: If there were more stars I would give it more. It is a little hard to understand but if you stick with it, it will begin to fall into place.
I wish there were more British mysteries like this. I highly recommend it for something different.
Customer Rating: Summary: State of Play Comment: The series is riveting, dramatic and suspenseful, everything American television is not. The series is believable, the actors ply their craft with a passion not often seen or experienced on out small screen.
Thoroughly enjoyable and I will be looking for more of this to enjoy.
Customer Rating: Summary: First rate political thriller Comment: "State of Play" is a wonderful political thriller that crosses a group of newspaper reporters, members of Parliament and the police. It is directed in six one-hour parts by David Yates who directed the most recent Harry Potter films.
"State of Play" has a superb cast including many familiar faces: Bill Nighy, James McAvoy and Kelly Macdonald (Carla Jean from "No Country for Old Men" with a very different accent), and Polly Walker (Atia from ROME) among others.
There's to be an all-star Americanized movie version of "State of Play" in 2009 staring Russell Crow, Ben Affleck, Helen Miren and Jeff Daniels directed by Kevin Macdonald ("Last King of Scotland"). That may end up being good, but condensing this story down to a two-hour movie will be challenging and will certainly require leaving a lot of the characters behind. Plus it will require extricating the story from its compelling backdrop that is the inner-workings of the British press and government, and that's one of the more fascinating aspects of the mini-series.
