For peace of mind on the go, n?vi 255 leads the way with voice-prompted turn-by-turn and optional MSN Direct to get you there on time and keep you informed. It's packed with millions of destinations and maps for North America or Europe. Like the rest of the compact n?vi 2x5-series, this portable navigator is priced right and ultra-easy to use.n?vi 255 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and n?vi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and and smooth map updates as you navigate. Its digital elevation maps show you shaded contours at higher zoom levels, giving you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. In addition, n?vi 255 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. Customer Rating: Summary: worth the money Comment: I am a service technician for a national security company. My route includes D.C and Maryland. My front seat always had a milk crate loaded with maps for these areas. I decided to purchase a GPS to make my life easier and it has made a huge difference. I no longer have to look at the maps and pull off to the side of the road. GPS is great. I looked at every GPS out there and had gotten many good comments about Garmins ease of use. After deciding on the model (nuvi 255w) i will say i am very pleased. However i will also like to mention that on my model(may just be my GPS) when i want to change from one state to another i have to unplug it to reset it. The interface will not automatically switch the state i am typing in. (a minor pain and to be honest..it wasnt enough to make me send this thing back because i now depend on it) overall a great product.
Customer Rating: Summary: Almost Perfect Comment: Unit works almost perfect with a few quirks which affect most GPS units.
It will give you an instruction to turn the wrong way on occasion but quickly realizes it's own mistakes and corrects its self.
The turn or exit instructions happen too close to the turns or exits when at highway speeds.
And lastly the speaker on the unit could be better. The higher end units play threw the stereo system in your vehicle which which is nice to hear but cost twice as much.
Even with these quirks I love my Garmen and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reasonably priced unit.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent product for the money Comment: I want to start out by saying that I spend about 2 weeks going back and forth between products, the manufacturers make it so hard to make a choice with so many products on the market. I was leaning more towards the Nuvi 650 that my boss has, I was 100% sure this was the right one for me. This all changed when I saw the Nuvi 255W and well I changed my mind real quick. I saw it had newer software than the 650 and with the Where am I? feature I was sold on it. I was buying this for my wife as she travels a lot for her job. Enough of why I bought it, let's get into the features.
The device works as advertised and gets you from point A to point B, yeah there might be times that it won't recognize the road you are on this happens on rural roads, and and newer roads though once you get on the highlighted route it works like a champ.
The text to speech is great for not having to look down at the screen endangering yourself and others on the road and after the voice updates the Garmin put out for the 255W the scratchiness and robotic sounding voice became crisp and very audible.
The widescreen is a plus and I highly recommend it, even though it has the wide screen you can stick it in your back pocket which can be conveniently used for walking directions. The screen is very bright and easy to see with direct sunlight and at night time. It is very user friendly and for the basic features it does not require the manual. I also like the option of going from a qwerty keyboard to a standard keyboard. Acquiring satellites is very fast though if you are moving while the acquisition is taking place it will take a little longer to acquire a satellite and of course on a overcast day you may experience difficulty acquiring a signal though understandable. I would say that 90% of the time it acquires a satellite within the first 2 minutes or less, the other 10% is due to the above events.
The points of interest feature is great and on top of already uploaded points of interest there are thousands more that can be downloaded making the 255W a great tool for traveling in unknown territories, there are some great websites for points of interest on the Garmin website or by doing a Google search. The POI loader software is great for loading the custom POIs you get and or create.
In conclusion, I am very pleased with my purchase and so far very happy with direction our Nuvi is taking us on the road. If you are looking for a simple wide screen GPS the Nuvi 255W is the right choice.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great unit for the price ! Comment: I've had the 255W for about a week now, and I am hard pressed to find anything substantial to be dissatisfied with. The unit is easy to understand and program right from the box. All the options are touch screen and self-explanatory. The battery life is good and satellite acquisition is snappy. Garmin's Points-Of-Interest updates need some improvement, as I was somewhat surprised to see that a local Lowe's Building Supply and a Cracker Barrel Restaurant were both omitted from the POI's in my area. Both of these chain stores have been in business here for more than 7 years. However, when considering price, quality and overall features, the 255W is an excellent choice for a GPS.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great GPS Comment: This is my first GPS and it is really easy to use. The GPS is very accurate as well. The maps are outdated but I think there will be an update soon.
