Editorial Reviews:

On her 2008 Island Def Jam debut, Love Is Dead, Estonian singer Kerli (born Kerli Koiv) unveils an electro-tinged collection of goth-pop songs. Coming across as Marilyn Manson's creepy kid sister, Kerli combines the sensibilities of Evanescence and Bjork, as best revealed on the haunting "Walking on Air" and the dramatic, string-heavy title track. 12 tracks.

Summary: A little too upbeat for my taste, but still a great album.
Comment: Judging by Kerli's image (a pale, blond-haired, ghostly young woman in black) and her album cover, you'd think the she would be the next Goth Princess of Pop music or something. Her album cover should have a picture of Kerli wearing a pink dress, holding a balloon in one hand, and skipping through a field of daisies with a rainbow in the background because this album is actually pretty upbeat! As a matter of fact a little TOO upbeat for my taste. However, it shouldn't discredit the fact that Kerli has a beautiful voice. She has a sort of high pitched, dry voice and on the opening track "Love Is Dead", one person immediately came to mind: Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries. I'm no expert on female singer/songwriters, but to me Kerli's overall vocal style reminds me Dolores O'Riordan covering Lauryn Hill or something. People will probably want to compare her to Bjork, but it's not really a fair comparison considering the ONLY similarities between the two is the fact that Kerli has a noticeable accent in most of her songs.

What makes LOVE IS DEAD a great album is Kerli's voice and the great production. Every song sounds different. The album has moments of being sexy, playful, dark, happy, but the overall vibe is definitely upbeat. The first track "Love Is Dead" is a slow, brooding song that has a musical track similar to Fiona Apple's "Criminal". A hard, thumping drum sound with backing pianos. It's definitely one of the darker songs on the album with Kerli singing lines like "love don't live here anymore" and "I know that you think of me when you're inside her". The second track "Walking On Air" sounds like a mashup of FRAGILE-era Nine Inch Nails and the Pussycat Dolls or something. It's starts off sounding very sinister until the somewhat up-tempo chorus kicks in. The next song "The Creationist" is a happy, love your neighbors, overcome your problems type of song that I actually didn't hate, thanks to the beautiful production. It sort of has a Gwen Stefani-ish feel to it. Speaking of Stefani, "Creepshow" sounds like "Hollaback Girl" meets REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA. An interesting song that sounds out of place because it feels like an Intro (Kerli repeats the lines "welcome to the Creepshow" over and over again), except it's toward the end of the album. The rest of the album, with the exception of one track which I'll get to shortly, is all happy, joyful, life is beautiful, blah blah blah music ("Beautiful Day" sounds like how you would expect it to sound, "Butterfly Cry" is about the world being wonderful). However, even if you're not into that sort of stuff, you'll probably still like it. While Kerli's subject matter in her songs doesn't really match her image, her production certainly does. Most of the music has a dark vibe to it and consists of a lot of drums, bass, keyboards, and strings. However, sandwiched in the middle of all of these songs is a total BUMMER of a track called "Bulletproof". While most of Kerli's lyrical content is happy and positive, "Bulletproof" finds her questioning certain choices that she makes and she admits her vulnerability. Anyone who's ever been in a bad relationship or is trying to make a relationship even WORK can relate to this song. It deals with confusion, anger, and forgiveness all in one song. Musically it's a sluggish track and is the musical equivalent of waking up with a really bad hangover. Kerli's style of singing slows down to match the slithering tempo and ultimately creates an awesome sound that really brings out her talent. She sounds amazing when she slows down and puts emotion into her voice. It makes me wish that there were more songs like it and definitely makes me respect her ability. This chick can wail.

Overall, LOVE IS DEAD is a great experience. While the lyrical content is not my thing, the production is excellent, and Kerli does have a beautiful voice. I'm really looking forward to where her career goes and where she ends up. I listen to all types of music from Black Metal to Country and have a pretty open mind, and I admit that I really like this album. I definitely recommend this album. Kerli stands out from the typical Pop crowd and proves that you don't need a huge budget, a famous sibling, the hotshot record producer of the moment, a phony record label-produced image, or a shamelessly self-promoting reality show to make it in music. Talent speaks for itself and Kerli has plenty of it.

Summary: This album surprised me
Comment: I heard of this artist on the 2008 Spike Scream Awards when she performed "Walking on Air" onstage. I was instantly hooked on the song (and got everyone else in my house hooked too). After looking up more of her music I decided I wanted to buy the album.
She has a kind of cool weirdness to her music and her songs each have a different style to it. I think the music itself sounds a little too synthetic sometimes - like there was no real band available to play or it was over-produced.

My favorite tracks on the album are "Walking on Air" and "Bullet Proof"All in all - its a good album and she is an interesting character.
I would recommend this album to anyone who is open minded about music and likes things that are a little different or kinda strange. The album cover makes it look like it may be some kind of goth-pop stuff but its not. Its a cool album and I'm happy with it :)

Summary: Twilight Zone
Comment: I was asleep in front of the TV when the 2008 scream awards began. I was then in the twilight zone when I awakened to this music. "Who is this?" I asked. In sharing this with my family, I find that my daughters and grand daughters already know who Kerli is. My youngest, age six, insists in hearing the end of the song when Kerli comes on the radio. "Love is dead" is a must buy for all ages.

Summary: One of the best I've heard this year!
Comment: Ok, I normally listen to a lot heavier stuff then this such as Slayer, GWAR, Pantera, Meshuggah, even Marilyn Manson things of that nature. But I was introduce to Kerli by some of my close friends and then I finally decided to look up some stuff about her on the good ol' youtube then I heard the title track and I got hooked. Now for the album I love the whole cd my faves are Strange boy, Love is Dead, I want nothing, and creepshow. The only song I dont really care for is up up up though i still like its just not one i listen to a lot. So i highly recommend you give this cd a shot.

Summary: Uniquely Beyond the REALM of NORM!!!!!!
Comment: Uniquely Beyond the REALM of NORM!!!!!!

I love this CD. I downloaded the 1st single on iTunes since it was the freee single of the week and thought it was interesting. I picked up the album at my local music store since it was $7.00. I believe an album cant be that bad if its for 7 bucks. To my suprise i picked up a winner. Kerli is very interesting and unique enough to make her stand out from the crowd. The real stand out track is the album name and title track for #1 which is "Love Is Dead". Its a wonderful CD and is very unqie and cutting edge. In a world full of typical artist its nice to see someone come along thats new and doing something different or something that hasnt been heard of in awhile. Her angelic voice has traces of Dolores from the Cranberries. There's a mixture of just about everything on the CD. A little bit Avril, alittle bit Dolores, alittle goth. Its all here. Pick up this CD because its truly a great debut from a very promising new artist.
