Editorial Reviews:

The idea was a simple one: songs for the piano and voice, recorded in one week in a bedroom, just to get them down on tape. But like all things surrounding the Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer-a one-woman machine who is a rock musician, artist, writer, yoga enthusiast, political activist and more-simplicity is not an easy thing to come by. Her small idea snowballed into something grand, exciting and nothing short of brilliant in the form of her debut solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer. Produced by Ben Folds, this is a departure from the music she creates as a critically acclaimed Dresden Doll and a major step towards showcasing her maturity as a songwriter, performer and most importantly as an artist.

Summary: Some of her best work to date.
Comment: This is some of Amandas best work to date. The sound is similar to the Dresden Dolls self titled album IMO. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dresden_Dolls#Studio_albums

There are songs that literally bring me to tears, not from the lyrics and such but just the sound in general. You know how you get goosebumps from listening to certain person/groups work that you love, well, sometimes I get an upwelling of emotion because a persons music is just that good. This album is just that good and I just can't recommend it enough.

Summary: Musical Brillance
Comment: Amanda Palmer isn't just one of the most creative artists out there, she's also full of such a raw energy and unbelievable passion. Every song grabs you somehow, whether it be musically or lyrically, you just can't stop listening. She talks about things that either most artists don't talk about or try and fail miserably to talk about. Her lyrics are beautiful yet shocking and at first abrasive. Her imaginative use of "found art" images throughout her songs is pure genius.

"i walk down my street at night
the city lights are cold and violent
i am comforted by the approaching sound of trucks and sirens
even though the world's so bad, these men rush out to help the dying
and though i am no use to them i do my part by simply smiling"
- from "Ampersand"

I was actually very surprised to find this cd much more easy to listen to on a first run through than her other Dresden Dolls cds, thanks in large part to some exquisite ballads "Ampersand", "Blake Says", "Another Year" and my personal favorite "Point of it All." All of which are simply beautiful to listen to. Even on her more experimental songs like "Strength Through Music" and "Guitar Hero", they never went overboard with being different. The excellent production by Ben Folds made the cd cohesive and really high quality.

I just saw Amanda last night in concert, and she has one of the most visually stunning and amazing live shows I've ever seen. From the zombie bride entrance to pounding out "Astronaut" under flashing white lights, to lip syncing to "Umbrella" on her pink ukulele while water from beer bottles was poured over her head, its truly a spectacle.

Amanda Palmer is simply one of the best living artists and this cd showcases her work brilliantly. A must buy.

Summary: Compelling Song Writing
Comment: I first saw The Dresden Dolls live in 2003 when they opened for The Legendary Pink Dots front man Edward Ka-spel. I saw Amanda Palmer standing around before the show with her face paint on and thought, "oh brother, what sort of crap is this going to be?"

The Dresden Dolls then proceeded to blow away my expectations and leave me standing with my jaw on the floor. I loved the chemistry between the two performers, the dramatic nature of the songs and the extremely charismatic performance. After the show, I threw down some cash to buy their CD, and I told Amanda that I was surprised I never heard of them, and that I expected them to go quite far. Her reply was more of a non-reply, more of a smile of smug self-assurance, which I think characteristically defines The Dresden Dolls and their, thus far, rather fruitful career. It also describes this new solo album by Amanda Palmer.

On one hand, it is easy to see "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" as The Dresden Dolls Lite, but that isn't entirely fair. The album does not deviate from any of the previous Dresden Dolls albums in any significant way, but it does have a slightly different artistic flair. What you have is a nice collection of clever songs with the same injection of character that Palmer injected into the Dresden Dolls albums. With these things, I often wonder why they bother with not calling it a Dresden Dolls album, but I guess The Beatles wouldn't have been The Beatles without, say, John Lennon. And so this album, missing the amazing drummer Brian Viglione, is not The Dresden Dolls.

My particularities regarding naming conventions aside, this is a great album. Some of the slower pieces put me to sleep, but the album as a whole is really holds my attention. I like Palmer's more aggressive pieces, such as the one titled "Leeds United". I have no idea what this song is about, but it is catchy, memorable and simply rocks out. "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" treads into a alternative/pop music sound that I do not often go for, but the overall confidence expressed in these songs is too compelling too ignore. Coupled with the fact that they are memorable and easy to pleasantly replay in my head all day makes it an album worth recommending.
