Editorial Reviews:

2 CD/1 DVD set marks the 30th anniversary of The Dead's historic concerts at Giza-More than 3 hours of rare and previously unreleased music remastered in HDCD plus over 100 minutes of extremely rare, previously unseen concert and behind the scenes footage.

Summary: Not Bad At All
Comment: These shows have been a source of much interest since the concerts and the CD audio, while not their best, is quite good, indeed. The DVD, however, is basically home movie quality, including the concert footage; in other words, crap. The performances on the CDs are good, but not consistent nor great, and so worth investing in to become part of your Dead library, but the DVD is barely worth watching once, let alone repeatedly. The packaging is great & thus the 4 star review.

Summary: they said it wasn't good....
Comment: The Dead always lamented these shows as below par....well, frankly....it's the Dead we are talking about here. Even below par, the Dead were exceptional. D.L. and team have selected the good stuff for us. I just wish it had the entire Hamza El-din portion. It's a classic show that is worth owning if you like the Dead.

Summary: If you just want the music, mp3 is fine, if you want more, get the CD
Comment: I admit that 90 percent of my music purchases are now downloads. Rarely do I buy a CD. Usually, if I do buy a CD, it's because it's not available as a download. That's not the case with the Egypt CD.

I'm a Deadhead and have two of the three nights on CDR, and since most of this release is drawn from the 16th, which I have on CDR, I'm essentially buying what I already have. However, the audio quality here is much improved.

However, I ended up forking out the extra cash to buy the CD, which includes a bonus DVD not available here, which has parts of one show, plus some really enjoyable "home movie" footage of the Dead, Ken Kesey, Bill Graham, Bill Walton and others goofing off in Egypt, climbing pyramids, taking a 3-day cruise down the Nile, etc.

In addition, the packaging is really cool. You open up the three panels and up pop pyramids. It's like the "stand up" art that used to accompany albums. (Jethro Tull's "Stand Up" immediately comes to mind. You opened up the gatefold album and the band members images literally "stood up" -- at least on early editions of the vinyl.

I know, it's all about the music. But in this case, it's also about the DVD and seeing the Dead and friends in Egypt, and the really fun packaging. In this case, I opted to buy the CD instead of saving money and just downloading the songs.

So, if you just want the music, then I recommend downloading the two CDs. You won't be disappointed. If you don't mind spending extra money, the CD with DVD and cool packaging are great. Either way, this is choice stuff.
