Influenced by his example, and often under his active guidance, a mass movement developed to oppose the pervasive system of segregation in the South. A memorable introduction to the civil rights movement, and to a nation-changing period of history that came to a tragic close in April 1968 with Dr. King's assassination in Memphis, Tennessee.
